Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track

The Division of Industrial Design seeks highly qualified candidates to support their newly formed Master of Design (MDes) in Integrated Design. The program aims to nurture front-line design professionals and visionaries for established and emerging fields of design, such as Service Design, Strategic Design, Experience Design, Interaction Design and Transformative Design. The program will attract students and professionals from various design-related disciplines, thus creating a multi-disciplinary learning and collaborative environment.

The MDes in Integrated Design at NUS will be the first advanced degree programme of its kind in Singapore, a global hub of business, technology, and service. It is home to a wide range of multinational corporations such as Dyson, Google, Facebook, IBM, SAP, DBS, Visa, Singapore Airlines, Samsung, Philips, and Dell. The MDes program will strategically leverage this professional environment by engaging students in immersive, research-based activities through their examination of design problems in collaboration with an industry collaborator.

This faculty position serves to strengthen scholarship in areas related to (Industrial) Design. The division regards scholarship as a creative process of inquiry and exploration that adds to the knowledge or appreciation of disciplinary or interdisciplinary understanding, including pedagogical innovations in learning design.

Responsibilities:

New faculty members appointed as Assistant Professor are expected to contribute strongly to the research and teaching missions of the programme. Teaching scenarios include a mix of studio and seminar-based learning environments. Themes include industry collaborative and advanced topic studios. These are complemented by seminars in Design Research Methods, Collaborative Research Tactics, Design Strategies & Leadership, and Emerging Topics in Design. In addition to teaching, the appointed faculty members are also expected to make service contributions to the division and college, engage in student recruitment, build relationships with industry collaborators, and maintain an active agenda of research and scholarship.

  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae (including research, teaching, professional practice, and administrative experience)
  • Publication and/or Project list;
  • Design portfolio
  • Statement of Teaching philosophy and methodology. Where available, evidence of teaching ability such as student achievements, feedback, or peer review reports (maximum 3 pages)
  • Statement of Research citing up to five significant publications, creative work or other scholarly contribution and explaining their significance (maximum 3 pages)
  • Citation and/or impact analysis of research or design output, highlighting papers with highest citation counts, and/or creative works with high impact;
  • A list of referees (minimum 2) with contact details (who will be contacted only with your concurrence); and
  • NUS Personal Data Consent for Job Applicants.
