General Requirements

Areas of Specialization: Philosophy and ethics of AI, philosophy and ethics of risk (catastrophic and existential), decision theory, environmental ethics (esp. climate change), , ethics of data science or other areas related to the impact of new technologies to the future of humanity.

The department has launched a new research centre, the Hong Kong Catastrophic Risk Centre, in January 2022 and the candidate is expected to make a contribution to the development of the Centre.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in Philosophy by the start of the appointment. The starting will be no later than August 2023. Applicants are required to have publications in Philosophy, preferably in leading journals. The appointee is expected to (1) carry out research and submit papers to leading journals; (2) submit grant proposals to various funding bodies; (3) organize seminars, reading groups, workshops or other related research activities; and (4) perform administrative duties as assigned by the Head of the Department. The teaching load will normally be only two courses per year, distributed according to the departmental needs and upon mutual agreement.

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity and incoming passage and baggage allowance for eligible appointee. Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years.
