You will join the University of Southampton working on the Future Transport Zone (FTZ) programme, a £28.75 million project funded by the Department for Transport to trial innovative and sustainable ways to move people and goods. This is a multidisciplinary project in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth and Solent Transport, comprising Southampton City Council, Portsmouth City Council, Isle of Wight Council, and Hampshire County Council. The research project started in January 2021 and will complete by the end of June 2025. The University of Southampton will develop and test a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) App in collaboration with a MaaS provider (Trafi) and investigate travel behaviour change to reduce private car usage, making travel journeys smarter and greener within the Solent sub-region. The University will also undertake monitoring and evaluation to assess the extent that the programme will change travel behaviour, reduced congestion, improve air quality, tackle climate change and transform the Solent sub-region into a better place to live and work.
You will be responsible for the development and application of primary research to assist in the design and testing of the MaaS tool. This will use the principles of Iterative Inclusive Design to test up to four cycles of the design and development process. This will include data collection in the form of interviews and surveys of MaaS users and non-users. They will liaise with other academics at the Universities of Portsmouth and Southampton working on barriers and drivers to the uptake of MaaS, and the impacts of MaaS on travel behaviour and the environment. The findings and methods developed are expected to be of sufficient scientific novelty and application that they will lead to publications in leading transport scientific journals. It is expected that the research findings will be disseminated through project meetings, international conferences, and industrial events.
It is essential you have a PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience) in industrial design and/or human factors. Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
