The University of Southampton is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to work on the AHRC funded project ‘Beyond Notability: Re-evaluating Women's Work in Archaeology, History and Heritage, 1870 – 1950’. The project seeks to transform understandings of women's work in archaeology, history and heritage in the 19th and 20^th centuries using inclusive cataloguing and linked open data (LOD) to unlock and share these histories. It is focused on archives held at the Society of Antiquaries of London (SAL), which from its foundation in 1707 was a hub for archaeological, historical and heritage research.

You will become part of a team of dedicated researchers at the Southampton Digital Humanities and the Institute for Classical Studies, University of London. You will have a PhD or equivalent qualifications and experience in Digital Humanities, Data Science, or a related subject area. You will lead in investigating the potential of innovative and experimental data analysis and visualisation to produce new interpretations of complex historical biographical data. You will bring expertise in data analysis and visualisation, and contribute to the ‘Beyond Notability’ project’s objective of generating new insights into large-scale, longitudinal changes in the nature of women’s archaeological, historical, and heritage work. You will present project findings effectively to academic and non-academic audiences. We would be particularly interested in candidates who are active researchers in linked open data, interactive data analysis, inclusive and/or justice-oriented approaches to data presentation, and/or advancing data visualisation in a humanities context.

The team have expertise in approaches and methods including digital infrastructures, critical data studies, and computational analysis. Working from the Digital Humanities Hub, the team provide access to expertise, specialist equipment, and technologies to support teaching, research and enterprise across the School of Humanities.

This is an externally funded 12-month fixed term post, full-time equivalent basis with the anticipated start date of 3 July 2023. Flexibility is available in terms of work pattern, to be agreed between the hiring manager and the successful applicant. Job share applicants will also be considered, as will applicants seeking to carry out the full-time equivalent work on a fractional basis between the agreed start date and 30 September 2024.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
