Research Fellow, Forest Ecology (Biological Sciences)

Job Description

The Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions at the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Forest Ecology. The position will focus on tropical forest carbon stock assessments. Prior experience on tropical forest dynamics plots, particularly in Southeast Asia, is an advantage. The position is expected to begin in March 2023 or soon thereafter. The appointment is for an initial period of one year with possibility of renewal.

The main responsibilities of the position include:

  • Manage country- and/or site-level research projects involving forest carbon accounting and assessments
  • Coordinate a team of researchers conducting forest carbon field measurements throughout Southeast Asia
  • Collect field data on forest carbon stocks and tree species identification, including the development of training workshops with research partners
  • Liaise with research collaborators and partners 
  • Develop and lead policy-relevant, multidisciplinary, and impactful research on nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • Collaborate with other Centre researchers as an effective team member
  • Mentor the Centre’s graduate and undergraduate students

Qualifications

Qualifications / Discipline:

  • PhD in biological sciences, forestry, botany, ecology, geography, environmental studies, or related field
  • PhD from a reputable university (or have the PhD conferred by the time the appointment commences)

Skills:

  • Knowledge on identification of tropical tree species and processing plant museum specimens 
  • Proficiency in statistics or ecological modelling, or other quantitative skills
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills
  • Highly self-motivated, excellent communicator, and a team player
  • Willing to work flexible hours and to take on extra duties as required
  • Ability to work independently

Experience:  

  • Research experience in tropical forest carbon accounting and assessments
  • Prior experience on tropical forest dynamics plots, particularly in Southeast Asia, is an advantage
  • Experience in managing and implementing research projects, including field surveys, in tropical forest ecosystems
  • Experience in processing and analysing various remote sensing datasets such as optical, LiDAR, SAR (preferred)
  • Experience in operating drones equipped with various sensors for forestry-related applications (preferred)
  • Publication record commensurate with career stage

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

  1. The appointment will be tenable for a maximum period of five (5) years
  2. The position comes with competitive remuneration
