Research Fellow, Soil Science (Biological Sciences)

Job Description

The Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions at the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Soil Science. The position will focus on belowground soil carbon stock assessments. Prior experience on belowground soil data collection and analyses, particularly in peatland and/or mangrove ecosystems in Southeast Asia, is an advantage. The position is expected to begin in March 2023 or soon thereafter. The appointment is for an initial period of one year with possibility of renewal. 

The main responsibilities of the position include:

  • Manage country- and/or site-level research projects involving soil carbon accounting and assessments
  • Coordinate a team of researchers conducting forest and soil carbon field measurements throughout Southeast Asia
  • Collect field data on soil carbon stocks, including the development of site-specific methodology and training workshops with research partners
  • Liaise with research collaborators and partners, including the development of concept notes or proposals for research collaboration related to regional carbon stock assessments in Southeast Asia
  • Develop and lead policy-relevant, multidisciplinary, and impactful research on nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • Collaborate with other Centre researchers as an effective team member
  • Mentor the Centre’s graduate and undergraduate students

Qualifications

Qualifications / Discipline:

  • PhD in soil science, geography, ecology, or related discipline, with knowledge of soil science basics, such as the chemical, biological, or physical properties of soils
  • PhD from a reputable university (or have the PhD conferred by the time the appointment commences)

Skills:

  • Proficiency in statistics or ecological modelling, or other quantitative skills
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills
  • Highly self-motivated, excellent communicator, and a team player
  • Willing to work flexible hours and to take on extra duties as required
  • Ability to work independently

Experience:  

  • Research experience in belowground soil carbon accounting and assessments in tropical peatland and/or mangrove ecosystems
  • Prior experience on soil carbon dynamics, particularly in Southeast Asia, is an advantage
  • Experience in managing and implementing soil research projects, including field surveys, in tropical peatland and/or mangrove ecosystems
  • Experience in processing and analysing various remote sensing datasets such as optical, LiDAR, and SAR (preferred)
  • Experience in digital soil mapping (preferred)
  • Publication record commensurate with career stage

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

  1. The appointment will be tenable for a maximum period of five (5) years
  2. The position comes with competitive remuneration
