Job description

We are recruiting for a post that provides an exciting opportunity to join the newly established BSc in Neuroscience and Psychology and become part of a thriving academic community at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London. 

The post-holder will undertake teaching activities on the BSc in Neuroscience and Psychology, and contribute to the administration, delivery, assessment and enhancement of taught modules. Key areas of contribution include supporting  the teaching of topics in the core BPS curriculum, including research methods and statistics. The post-holder is expected to have a strong grounding in R. Depending on the applicant’s previous experience and knowledge, they may contribute to teaching in a broad range of topics in neuroscience, including functional neuroimaging, electrophysiology, computational psychology/neuroscience. 

Specifically, key aspects of the role will include:  

 

Course development and administration 

  • Assist with planning, teaching and assessment of modules within the BSc Neuroscience and Psychology degree.  
  • Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports innovative and research-led approaches to student learning.  
  • Contribute to the administration of modules, including preparing module information, coordinating teams of graduate teaching assistants (e.g., seminar leaders), managing the procedures for student coursework submissions, marking assessments, and the timely and accurate processing and recording of marks.   

Teaching and assessment

  • Develop and apply the teaching methods and materials required to create an innovative learning experience, promoting interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students, and undertaking such administration as is necessary to ensure that teaching staff and students have timely and appropriate access to these materials. 
  • Supervise student research projects and dissertations (preference for projects involving (f)MRI, EEG, psychophysiology, eye-tracking and/or quantitative and computational data analysis). 
  • Collaborate on the writing and editing of formative and summative assessments, including checking examination papers for accuracy. 
  • Mark formative and summative assessments, moderate the marking of assignments and provide students with high quality feedback on their work. 

Research and Professional Activities 

  • Postholders are encouraged to identify and undertake activities to develop individual research interests, including contribution to joint projects within the Faculty/Department, particularly where these activities enhance the provision of UG research projects and research-led education.   
  • Participate in personal and professional development activities where appropriate. 

Pastoral care

  • Act as a Personal Tutor to students on the BSc Neuroscience and Psychology programme. 

 

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract. 

This is a full-time  100% full time equivalent.

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.   

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria  

•        First degree in Psychology or Neuroscience  (2:1 or above) and PhD in Psychology or (Cognitive/Systems/Computational) Neuroscience (or cognate areas) 

•        Knowledge of BPS curriculum to support teaching in core Psychology areas 

•        Knowledge of research area to develop content and supervise UG student projects (preference for projects involving (f)MRI, EEG, psychophysiology, eye-tracking and/or quantitative and computational data analysis). 

•        Demonstrable experience in using quantitative statistics, current transparent research practises, programming for data analysis and simulation (primarily in R; MATLAB, Python and others a welcome advantage) (e.g. by publication record) 

•        Knowledge of human functional neuroimaging methods (fMRI and EEG; e.g. experimental design, task development, data analysis) 

•        Experience in delivering high quality UG teaching (leading seminars, marking and providing high quality summative and formative feedback) 

•        Experience in supervising organising UG projects/dissertations & working with human participants (eg preparing ethics applications) 

 

Desirable criteria

•        Higher Education teaching qualification (e.g. PGCAPHE) 

•        Being a team player able to engage actively with students and colleagues and contribute to the management and administration of the programme

•        A demonstrable understanding of, and commitment to working within, principles of equality and diversity
