The University of East London (UEL) has been pioneering futures since 1898: from the 2nd Industrial Revolution through to where we are now, the 4th. We are a careers-led university, dedicated to supporting our students to develop the skills, emotional intelligence and creativity needed to thrive in a constantly changing world.

Having experienced substantial growth in recent years, the School of Health, Sport & Bioscience currently has 4 departments with a range of professional programmes, and we are now seeking to appoint to a Head of Department for Bioscience (AQ1751).

With a strong research profile, the School has invested heavily in the Department of Bioscience and UEL’s laboratories are modern and suitably equipped to provide a high quality, internationally excellent teaching and research environment. Offering a range of opportunities to students through links with employers, local NHS Trusts, professional bodies, and other organisations, UEL is eager to secure an innovator, who is appreciative of the challenges and opportunities in providing world-class education to our future professionals.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their detailed understanding of contemporary aspects of bioscience practice at regional and national level. They will also have a track record of leading and managing programme team(s) in higher education including extensive experience of curriculum development and management of relevant programmes.

UEL is one of the most diverse and vibrant universities in the global capital. Our pioneering and forward-thinking vision is making a positive and significant impact to the communities we serve, inspiring both our staff and students to reach their full potential.

As one of the most socially inclusive and international Universities and comprising one of the most diverse staff populations in the UK (50% of our professoriate identify from black or minority ethnic backgrounds), we are hugely proud of our track record in reducing inequalities (ranked 1st in the UK & 2nd globally, Times Higher Education Global Impact Rankings, 2020) and our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is at the heart of our strategy Vision 2028.
