The University of Surrey’s School of Psychology is looking to recruit several outstanding academics at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level. The successful candidates will become part of our highly successful academic team. The positions are open to people with emerging or established international research reputations, with interests that match any of the Department of Psychological Science’s existing strengths in Environmental, Health, Cognitive, Social and Developmental and Biological Psychology.
The University of Surrey is a top-ten UK University set in a beautiful campus half an hour’s journey from London. The School of Psychology was rated 12th in the 2023 Complete University Guide League Table. We are seeking to appoint academic staff to our school to continue to strengthen our research and teaching environment.
The School has recently undergone a major refurbishment to enhance our environment including the on-site laboratories for cognitive neuroscience and 6 rooms for VR/XR research. There is an excellent Babylab with eye-tracking facilities suitable for use with very young children and we have two observation labs which can be used for both teaching and research. We have recently invested heavily in equipment including eye-trackers, Biopac data acquisition equipment, actigraphy watches, transcranial magnetic stimulation, as well as mobile EEG, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, and transcranial electrical stimulation equipment with the intention to ensure that our staff receive excellent conditions to run their experiments. We are also part of the CUBIC centre, which allows access to MRI scanning facilities, and have ambitions to expand in this domain and other neuroimaging modalities (MEG).
Successful candidates will become part of a research active team in the school of psychology and can join one or more of our research groups such as:,
- Social, Emotions, and Equality in Relations (SEER). This group is primarily concerned with research that supports and sustains positive interpersonal relations, equality, generous inclusion, and civil society
- Health Psychology. This group addresses areas such as rumination, heart rate variability and stress; common and less common chronic conditions including obesity, Misophonia, Brain trauma and fibromyalgia; and behaviour change with a focus on habits, eating behaviour and weight management.
- Environmental Psychology. This group studies people-environment interactions and how these interactions affect both the quality of that environment and human wellbeing. We study environments at different scales from the home and workplace to the natural and global environment.
- Development, Education, Learning and Outreach in Psychology (DevELOP). This group conducts research that covers the pre-natal through to adulthood and aims to answer fundamental questions to impact both theory and practice.
- Cognitive Psychology. This group works to answer fundamental questions in cognition as well as looking to apply our understanding to solve problems faced by individuals, organisations, and our society. It uses a number of approaches to answer these questions, including neuroimaging, cognitive modelling, and a wide range of behavioural experimental techniques.
- Brain and Behaviour. This group investigates cognitive functioning and mental health across the lifespan, with a particular focus on translational research and the development of brain-based interventions. It uses a range of methodologies including neuroimaging and neuromodulation and also conducts research into the microbiome gut-brain axis.
- Food, Consumer Behaviour and Health. This internationally renowned multi-disciplinary research centre seeks to understand food-related practices and their social influences within the context of the food system, evaluating interventions to deliver desirable health, social and environmental outcomes.
