Euro University of Bahrain (“EUB”) invites applications for a permanent, full-time academic position at the level of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant/Associate Professor) in Computer Science. Candidates should be able to deliver excellent teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, have a suitable track record of high-quality research outputs appropriate to their career level and a commitment to meaningful knowledge exchange activities.  As EUB is a new, ambitious university, the successful candidate will have ample opportunities to support and develop each of these activities from the ground up, particularly through developing expertise in their chosen area of research.  They will also play a key role in developing links between EUB’s developing collaborations in Europe, particularly with the University of London. 

ABOUT EURO UNIVERSITY OF BAHRAIN:  EUB is a new private university in Manama, Bahrain following over a decade of planning and consultation with various stakeholders and regulators both in Bahrain and in a number of European countries.  EUB has been granted its licence from the Higher Education Council of the Kingdom of Bahrain following its approval from the University of London as a Recognised Teaching Centre.  In the autumn of 2022, EUB began offering the University of London’s International Foundation Programme with progression onto University of London degree programmes.  EUB is currently setting up its initial three colleges in Business, Computer Science, and Law, and the academic staff EUB is currently recruiting will play a key role in the initial development of these three colleges.  Over the next few years, EUB plans to steadily increase its academic programmes, expanding into different discipline areas and postgraduate degrees.  Upon completion of its state-of-the-art campus, EUB will be the largest private university in terms of facilities and students in the Gulf Cooperation Council (“GCC”) region with an international reputation for academic excellence.  EUB’s strategic plan is to develop a distinctly European campus with key partners across Europe, offering an outstanding student experience, generating internationally leading research, and engaging meaningfully in the region and globally.  We are looking for exceptional, enthusiastic academic staff who will play a key role in contributing to EUB’s teaching, research and engagement activities in this exciting project.

Summary of the role:  The role holder will plan and deliver outstanding teaching, contribute high quality research, engage in meaningful knowledge exchange and help achieve the overall strategic objectives of the University in these areas.

Major Duties:

  • Delivering outstanding teaching that is informed through current research activity in the area.
  • Mentoring and managing students regarding academic matters.
  • Communicating effectively with students, including via office hours and electronic means.
  • Teaching, examining and undertaking administrative duties on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as required.
  • Carrying out curriculum development in the form of design of individual and/or revision of courses within the college and international partner institutions.
  • Supervising students and project dissertations undertaken by undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Undertaking personal development in teaching skills and practice, such as acquiring necessary teaching qualifications.
  • Contributing to quality monitoring of academic programmes.
  • Providing cover where necessary, e.g., sabbaticals, staff absences, etc.
  • Carrying out specific college/wider university roles and functions as may be reasonably required.
  • Engaging fully in college activity, as evidenced by participation in meetings, seminars, recruitment events and running of the college.

Person Specification

  • A PhD (or an expectation thereof within a reasonable timeframe) or equivalent in Computer Science or related discipline. (Essential)
  • A pipeline of research papers suitable for targeting high quality journals or a record of high-quality research outputs.  (Essential)
  • A willingness to engage with an agenda of external research income generation.  (Essential)
  • The ability to teach introductory, intermediate and advanced material in relevant areas of Computer Science at the undergraduate and postgraduate level to a high standard, particularly such or similar modules among the following:  Programming, Computational Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics, Computer Science, How Computers Work, Algorithms and Data Structures and Web Development.  (Essential)
  • The ability to undertake appropriate administrative responsibilities to a high standard.  (Essential)
  • The ability to work effectively with a diverse group of colleagues and students in a multilingual setting.  (Essential)
