Role Description

About the Role

We are seeking an individual with a strong research background in the allocation and increasingly competing use of water for food production at river basin to global scales. This post will build on Cranfield University’s longstanding reputation in understanding agricultural systems and water management, and their interactions with the environment.

You will be expected to conduct high impact, internationally excellent research in developing integrated water management solutions that address the cross-scale, inter-sectoral trade-offs in physical and virtual water for food at multiple scales; develop a vibrant and sustainable research group by leading and participating in research bid proposals to attract grant funding to support new junior research staff and students; enhance the reputation of the Centre for Water, Environment and Development through multidisciplinary collaboration, and deliver high quality postgraduate-level teaching as part of our existing MSc Water and Environment programmes.

The post will support the Centre’s existing research competencies in environmental and agricultural water management, including climate change and environmental impacts, water resources systems modelling, irrigation science and ecosystem services.

About You

You will have a PhD in a relevant subject linked to the use and management of water resources and their interaction with food systems. This could be from a broad perspective or more sector specific including agricultural, environmental, or water resources management. You will have experience of winning and managing research grants and working in multidisciplinary collaborations with academics and industry. You will have a track record of publishing high impact journal articles in one or more aspects of water resources, food and water policy, environmental economics, water resources or food systems. You will have a commitment to scientific rigour, a passion for solving applied problems, and enjoy engaging with experts and opinion-formers in academia, industry and government.

About Us

As a specialist postgraduate university, Cranfield’s world-class expertise, large-scale facilities and unrivalled industry partnerships are creating leaders in technology and management globally. Learn more about Cranfield and our unique impact here.

You will be based within the Centre for Water, Environment and Development which undertakes cutting-edge transformational research and teaching to support integrated solutions to the world’s most profound water challenges (regarding availability, use, supply and quality) that take account of the needs of people and the environment within a context of equitable and sustainable development. Our academic and research staff, including scientists, engineers, technologists, policy specialists and social scientists are engaged in delivering postgraduate teaching, research, consultancy and training in an international arena. Our core research activities are focused around 5 Communities of Practice (CoPs). This vacancy is relevant to several of these but primarily those on Water for Food in a Changing Climate and Catchment Management. You will also be expected to foster research links with colleagues in other parts of the university including those within the Agrifood and Environment Themes.
