This is an exciting opportunity to join the new School of Sustainability, Civil and Environmental Engineering, bringing together the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering with the Centre for Environment and Sustainability, as we seek to recruit a teaching track lecturer for six months (in the first instance). We are looking to appoint a highly qualified and inspirational individual with a collegiate approach and passion for teaching.

We offer highly praised undergraduate BEng/MEng programmes with excellent employability prospects, together with a suite of popular and innovative MSc degrees in both contact and distance learning modes.

The University of Surrey has received a prestigious Gold award in the first-ever Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) in 2017. The University was commended as outstanding by the national TEF panel for stretching and supporting students through rigorous course design and assessment, and for delivering academic provision which is innovative, personalised and well-resourced.

The School also formed part of a very successful REF 2021 return in Engineering, with 93% world leading or internationally excellent outputs. Research in Civil Engineering is organised into thematic groups: Air Quality, Geomechanics, Infrastructure Systems Engineering, and Water and Environmental Engineering.

The Role Responsibilities

  • The successful applicant will contribute to teaching of different subjects including mathematics, Structures and Geotechnics at undergraduate level (including design modules) and to the wider taught programmes in the School.
  • The successful applicant will develop and deliver a programme of learning support, specifically aimed at student in FHEQ Levels 4 & 5 in civil engineering offering support in mathematics and its application. Also, create and manage a positive learning environment during the spring/summer breaks, specifically for undergraduate students.

Essential Skills Required

  • A background in civil engineering and a teaching profile in Mathematics, Geotechnics or Structures.
  • A PhD in civil engineering or a relevant field.
  • A growing record of high quality impactful publications and involvement in initiating and conducting pedagogic research are significant advantages.
  • Evidence of high quality teaching or potential to achieve this and design experience.
  • Evidence of involvement in the accreditation of engineering programmes are significant advantages.
