About the opportunity

The Imaging and Phenotyping Laboratory is a cross-disciplinary, data-intensive scientific group with the mission to revolutionise radiology, imaging, and phenotyping to be the key source of clinical decision-making information in medicine.

The University is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow ( Level B or Level C) to work with Professor Stuart Grieve and his team in the Imaging and Phenotyping Laboratory. The goal of the laboratory is to have work translated into frameworks for the early identification and treatment of chronic brain diseases, improving outcomes for people. The incumbent will work directly with Professor Grieve and other high-profile academic, clinical and industry collaborators to develop, design and conduct research that has high impact and clinical relevance and publish work in high-impact journals.

In this role you will work on the BrainPassport project, a set of projects integrating clinical data, multi-omics and imaging that aims to understand cognitive and emotional dysfunction across the continuum of brain injury, concussion, depression, and dementia. BrainPassport also contains cohort studies in metabolic and neurodegenerative conditions such as motor neuron disease and phenylketonuria.

BrainPassport already consists of > 3000 ultra-high-resolution diffusion and fMRI datasets with AUD7 million of current funded studies.

You will need to be very well organised and have very good communication skills, as the role requires significant levels of cooperation within the group, with research collaborators and with vendors. High-level problem solving skills and the ability to function productively, efficiently and autonomously from direct supervision are vital to successfully performing the role. This position is within the Imaging and Phenotyping Laboratory; Sydney School of Health Sciences/ Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Work across projects in a fast-paced and technically demanding imaging and phenotyping lab
  • code across multiple languages. You will need to have familiarity with database architecture including SQL, be competent in statistics and to be able to apply AI/ machine learning methods
  • work on projects which all share a common data architecture, and combine imaging with other types of data including genetics, clinical data, other forms of "omics" (metabolomics, proteomics etc), and any other available "phenotype" information
  • contribute to successful applications for competitive research grants and/ or funding
  • contribute to research collaborations facilitating knowledge or technology transfer
  • bring and maintain a research profile that meets University expectations and standards - including publication of peer-reviewed journal articles and producing conference papers.

About you

  • Have a PhD in an academic field relevant to the discipline -preferable background in scientific medical research, engineering, or computer science
  • a developing research profile evidenced by original, high-quality and independent research in the discipline or area of expertise
  • experience and expertise in data analysis and statistics
  • experience in assisting with student supervision including supervision of honours students and potentially the co-supervision of PhD students
  • high levels of motivation and the capacity for independent work
  • experience in supervising or mentoring others and/or coordinating team activities
  • demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively across a range of media and forum
  • expertise in specialist software including MRtrix, freesurfer and FSL is mandatory. Python, matlab, R and other general computing skills are also desirable.
