Open Rank Faculty Position in Urban Studies

Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in urban studies or related field (specialization areas including, but not limited to, urban design, urban planning, urban economics, urban/rural sociology, urban policy and governance, urban environment and resource management, sustainable urban development, migration and urbanization, transport policy and planning, smart cities, etc.). Applications are invited for faculty position at the rank of full professor/associate professor level with prospect for tenure. Junior candidates with very competitive academic records may be considered for position of assistant professor.

Candidates for full professor or associate professor position are expected to have solid evidence of excellence in teaching/research/service, and a strong track record of sustained high-quality research/scholarship outcomes in the expertise area(s), as evidenced by research publications in competitive international outlets in the relevant areas of urban studies. In addition, candidates need to demonstrate academic leadership and strong commitment to the highest standard of excellence. Applicants are advised to provide quality indicators for the journals where they have research publications (e.g., journal impact factor, journal ranking in a relevant category, as available in the Journal Citations Reports of the Web of Science). 

Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially, leading to longer-term appointment or tenure later, subject to successful performance evaluation and mutual agreement. In cases where a candidate has an established record of excellence and demonstrable potential for continued success, tenure may be offered to the candidate at the time of initial appointment.

The appointee is expected to commence work in academic year 2023-2024; to be a leading scholar in the field of urban studies; to teach a range of courses in core areas of urban studies; to develop cooperative relations with urban studies industries; and to assist in curriculum development and administrative assignments. A Ph.D. must be in hand prior to taking up the appointment.

Salary & Benefits

Salary will be competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment will be made under the establishment of CUHK, Shenzhen and statutory benefits will be provided according to the prevailing labor laws applicable in the People’s Republic of China. The appointee will be based at the University campus in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China.
