Job Description:

The School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast, is currently seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the post of Research Fellow in the experimental development and numerical simulation of new generation composite joints for maritime applications. The Research Fellow will work as part of the Belfast Maritime Consortium led by Artemis Technologies.   

The successful candidate will join the Advanced Composites Research Group (ACRG) in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast and contribute to world-leading research in the computational modelling of composite materials and structures. The postholder will also contribute to the development of advanced experimental tools which will enable them to obtain unique material parameters that will be used to feed numerical models and for validation.

The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate you have: 

  • An undergraduate degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Or be about to obtain, a PhD in the field of mechanics of composite materials or structures.
  • At least 3 years’ relevant research experience.   

Must be able to demonstrate:

  • Sufficient breadth of knowledge of composite materials and their utilisation
  • Knowledge of composite damage mechanics
  • Extensive understanding of experimental mechanics
  • Knowledge of structural testing and material characterisation methods
  • Understanding of finite element analysis and computational fracture mechanics.

This post is fixed term for 18 months or until 31 December 2024, whichever is sooner. Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
