About the Interprofessional Education and Practice Development team, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences

Interprofessional collaborative practice is key to the delivery of safe, efficient and integrated healthcare. The Interprofessional Education and Practice Development (IPEP) team was established in 2020, highlighting a Faculty commitment to ensuring that our health professional courses equip graduates with the knowledge, skills and attributes required to meet the health and social needs of the communities they serve. The health challenges posed by chronic disease, the community’s call for coordinated healthcare, particularly in light of the pandemic, and efficiencies required by healthcare institutions have further propelled the agenda for collaborative practice.  Accreditation bodies now require evidence of interprofessional education and the achievement of collaborative practice competencies within university programs.

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences has an enviable research record and is the University of Melbourne’s largest faculty in terms of management of financial resources, employment of academic and professional staff, teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate (including research higher degree) students and the conduct of basic and applied research.

The Faculty is Australia’s overall leader in clinical, pre-clinical and health sciences and is ranked 11th globally in 2021 by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

About the Role

The Interprofessional Education & Practice Development team is seeking to appoint a First Nations Health Lead (Ways of Knowing Program) to support effective and coordinated delivery of the annual interprofessional Ways of Knowing program.

This position will suit someone who is passionate about advancing learning and teaching in cultural safety and collaborative practice for health professions students and staff. The appointee must have high-level verbal, written, interpersonal and program coordination skills.

This position represents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team committed to promoting cultural safety practice and collaborative practice widely across the Faculty of MDHS.  In working closely with academic staff within the IPEP team and across the Faculty of MDHS, the First Nations Health Lead (Ways of Knowing Program) will support the annual delivery and evaluation of the Ways of Knowing Program.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with academic staff from across the six Schools within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences to support an effective and coordinated delivery of the annual Ways of Knowing Program
  • Initiate and manage the day-to-day operations of the Ways of Knowing Program, including establishing timelines and deliverables
  • Manage ongoing relationships with internal and external partners and other key stakeholders
  • Provide advice to subject coordinators and Directors of Learning and Teaching across the Faculty of MDHS regarding the implementation of the Ways of Knowing Program and how this articulates with a programmatic approach to cultural safety across the disciplines

About You

Your knowledge of health inequities faced by disadvantaged and minority groups in Australian society, particularly Indigenous Australians, will help shape this role and support the Ways of Knowing team to embed cultural safety practice widely across the Faculty.  You have excellent interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds to support productive teamwork and collaboration.  You will be supported to develop your academic career with mentorship from the Associate Dean, Indigenous and First Nations and non-Indigenous staff across the Faculty.

You will also have:

  • A tertiary degree (or an equivalent degree or professional qualification) or equivalent combination of study and work experience relevant for the role
  • Demonstrated experience in learning and teaching of cultural safety practice
  • Excellent organisational skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead the coordination and delivery of programs (educational and/or other relevant events) including problem-solving skills to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and flexibly within a team

To ensure the University continues to provide a safe environment for everyone, this position requires the incumbent to hold a current and valid Working with Children Check.
