The University of New England (UNE), Armidale is a regionally based, globally networked university that is renowned for the quality of its student experience and the excellence of its research specialisations. UNE pioneered teaching to external students making it the most experienced provider of distance and innovative online education. Currently there are over 26,000 students (84% of whom are distance/online students) and approximately 1,200 academic and general staff.
The School of Rural Medicine
he School of Rural Medicine was established primarily to run the Joint Medical Program (JMP) with our partner, the University of Newcastle. UNE offers excellence in teaching, learning and research, providing opportunities for students to learn from academics and clinicians, including a range of interdisciplinary clinicians and medical specialists. The School looks to distinguish itself as the national leader in providing regional and rural training to produce a quality medical workforce.
We pride ourselves on giving our medical students a truly rural experience, exposing them to the challenges and rewards of rural practice as well as the needs of rural and remote communities.
Our small medical program cohort affords us the ability to provide personalised student support, including access to a broad range of scholarships, extracurricular clinical opportunities and learning experiences targeted at job readiness. Our small classes give students the chance to interact closely with their facilitators, many of whom are engaged in rural medical practice. The 5 year, undergraduate entry Joint Medical Program is delivered end-to-end at UNE, with clinical placements across various parts of New South Wales.
