Job Details

Are you an experienced Researcher with specialist skills in organic chemistry looking for an opportunity to join the UK's first modern research-intensive University?

ABOUT THE TEAM

A multidisciplinary team from Northumbria University, Sunderland University and Newcastle-upon-Tyne NHS Trust, supported by multinational biotechnology company bioMérieux, have worked together for over 30 years for the design and development of methods for the rapid detection and identification of pathogenic bacteria. In 2022 the collaboration was awarded the RSC Analytical Horizon Prize in recognition of their success.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Northumbria University (Newcastle upon Tyne, City Centre Campus) are looking to appoint a Senior Research Assistant (PDRA) in organic chemistry to join this team, and to provide expertise in the synthesis of novel heterocycles in support of the research. The successful candidate will also contribute to the training of undergraduate and postgraduate research students, assist in delivery of project goals, and provide support to events within the Department of Applied Sciences.

The role will be predominately laboratory based and multi-disciplinary combining synthetic chemistry and some clinical microbiology, though full training will be provided in the latter. This will allow you the opportunity to develop expertise across these diverse fields of science, supported by leading expert scientists from both Northumbria University, the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, and bioMérieux.

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 therefore the successful candidate will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Please know this is a fixed term post, offering an 18-month contract.

ABOUT YOU

This project is an excellent opportunity for a researcher with a PhD in organic chemistry. You will be an integral part of the multidisciplinary research effort, developing their research and project management skills in the process. We welcome applicants with previous experience of delivering research projects (university or industrial), writing technical reports to a high standard, and presenting findings to colleagues and collaborators. You must be able to work and communicate effectively across a multi-disciplinary team and to deliver the project goals to a tight deadline.
