Job Details

Applications are invited for a Permanent post of an Associate Professor of Biomedical Systems Biology, within the UCD School of Medicine.

Since 2009 UCD has made substantial investments into systems biology and the computational modelling of cancer through Systems Biology Ireland (SBI). An SBI flagship programme is the development of personalized medicine approaches (`Digital Twins') that harness the strengths of UCD in systems biology, computational modeling and clinical research. Towards this aim the UCD School of Medicine (SoM) require an ambitious investigator who will build a cutting-edge research programme in SBI that develops and applies computational models that enable personalized medicine with a specific focus on personalised approaches in cancer medicine.

This post will bridge a critical gap between basic and clinical research. The focus is on developing and implementing algorithms that (a) support the development of Digital Twin models of cancer patients; (b) take advantage of in vitro and preclinical models available at SBI to functionally explain the molecular mechanisms how genetic aberration drive malignant transformation; (c) identify mechanisms of drug resistance, approaches to overcome it, e.g. by new drug combinations or new drug targets; and (d) closely work with clinical colleagues to take these models to clinical applications. To accomplish these aims, the ideal candidate will have (a) a strong track record in mathematical and computational modeling (biophysical models, dynamic models, hybrid artificial intelligence (AI)/dynamic models) at a very advanced level proven by publications and practical applications; (b) a rising international reputation; (c) an excellent understanding of cancer biology; and (d) a track record of cooperation with clinicians.

The post will be embedded in the highly interdisciplinary, vibrant environment at SBI in UCD SoM, where it can leverage the high integration between dry and wet lab work and close interaction between basic and clinical research. It also will support the strategic research goals of UCD's `Rising to the Future' strategy, especially Theme 2 `Transforming through Digital Technology' and Theme 3 `Building a Healthy World'.
