The School of Ocean and Earth Science (SOES) is part of the University of Southampton and based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS). NOCS brings together over 500 educators, researchers and support staff drawn from Earth science, oceanography and engineering. SOES includes nearly 1000 students, from undergraduate to PhD. The Geology and Geophysics Research Group is renowned for its expertise in marine geology and geophysics, high resolution acoustic and seismological data acquisition and tectonics, as well as applied geoscience areas such as carbon capture and storage site monitoring, geoarchaeology and offshore renewables infrastructure investigations.

We are seeking to recruit a Technician in Marine and Terrestrial Geophysics to support research and teaching activities. The role would specifically involve maintenance of geophysical equipment for research projects and for teaching, operation of equipment both offshore (nearshore and coastal environments) and onshore for taught field courses in geoscience and oceanography, participation in data collection for a range of cutting-edge research projects in marine geophysics, and development of equipment where needed.

Applicants will have qualifications and/or experience at least equivalent to an HND in electronics, and ideally a degree in a relevant subject area (electronics, geology, geophysics, oceanography). Applicants will have a track record of working with electronic equipment and proven experience of fault-finding and repair. They will ideally have experience with maintenance and repair of marine instrumentation and experience conducting marine and terrestrial geophysical surveys. Knowledge and experience of design and manufacture of custom instrumentation, ideally in marine or terrestrial geophysics, would be desirable.

This is a full time, permanent post starting on 1 April or as soon as possible thereafter.
