We have an exciting opportunity for an applied statistician to work across all the research themes comprising ARC Wessex. You will work closely with the statistical team and the ARC research theme and project leads, taking responsibility for advice and consultancy on statistical matters relating to project design, and will also be responsible for statistical analysis or statistical mentoring for quantitative researchers, as required by a given project.

Although candidates should have as an absolute minimum an academic qualification equivalent to an MSc in statistics with a substantial medical/healthcare component. However, we are especially seeking candidates with a PhD containing a significant use of applied statistical methods, or who possess an equivalent level of experience in this area.

In addition, candidates should possess strong programming skills in at least two major statistical software languages, with a willingness and flexibility to learn to program in other statistical software packages, as required. You should have good communication skills, possess initiative, and be able to work effectively within teams of different sizes, disciplines and which potentially comprise team members from a range of organisations (e.g. academic, NHS, funding bodies). The ability to engage with clients in a statistical consulting scenario is essential.

The Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Wessex is an organisation funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) with a remit to support applied health and care research that responds to, and meets, the needs of local populations and local health and care systems. NIHR ARC Wessex is one of 15 ARCs across England, part of a £135 million investment by the NIHR to improve the health and care of patients and the public within and beyond the Wessex region.

Our ARC conducts applied health research with the aims to improve outcomes for patients and public; improve quality, delivery and efficiency of health and care services; increase the sustainability of health and care systems locally and nationally, through collaborative partnership. It has four thematic programmes of work: Ageing and Dementia, Healthy Communities, Long Term Condition and Workforce & Health systems. We have a close relationship with our stakeholders within the region, which include a wide range of NHS organisations, local universities, charities, local authorities and others.

The successful applicant should be willing to travel within the Wessex area, as required, and occasionally further afield within the UK.

The post is available on a full time (or part-time) basis and will be based at Chilworth Science Park. The employing organisation is the University of Southampton which offers a competitive salary, pension scheme and other benefits. The University supports flexible working, including the possibility to work remotely for some of the time, where the role permits and the individual has a suitable homeworking environment.
