About the job

The Department of Architecture and Planning (IAP) is seeking a candidate for a position as Associate Professor in Urban and Regional Planning with special emphasis on engaging actively with the Sustainable Development Goals in the context of planning theory and practice.

IAP is one of four departments at the Faculty of Architecture and Design at NTNU. The department offers education at bachelor, master’s, and PhD level in Architecture, and at master´s and PhD level in Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Ecological Planning, as well as Real Estate and Facilities Management. The department conducts research within the professional fields of the study programs as well as research on Smart Cities.

The successful candidate will be associated with the group in Planning at IAP and take part in teaching and research within this field. The candidate will be responsible for teaching in the field of Planning and is expected to actively contribute to research activities at the department as well as collaborating with other NTNU faculties and external partners as regional and municipal planning authorities as well as private and non-governmental organizations.

NTNU offers an excellent context for interdisciplinary research and the department cooperates with departments at the faculties of engineering, social and educational sciences, natural sciences, and medicine and health sciences.

Duties of the position

• The management and development of high-quality teaching activities at our Master's programs in Planning, and at other programs offered by the department when required.
• Teaching of courses in Regional- and Municipal Planning, and Integrated Land Use and Transportation Planning, Placemaking and Site Analysis.
• Initiate and develop new research and engage in applications for external research funding, e.g., from the Research Council of Norway, European research and educational agencies, the industry sector, and other available resources.
• Conduct research on the level of international standards, coordinate research projects, and to publish individually and in teams in international per-review journals.  
• Supervise PhD students and engage in PhD education.
• Administrative work related to managing teaching and research. 

Required qualifications 

Associate Professor: 

You must have the qualifications required for the position of Associate Professor in the field of Urban og Regional Planning, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts 

• Your PhD, or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality, and scientific experience must be primarily in the field of Urban and Regional Planning or a field that is relevant within a public planning system and its procedures, formal rules and laws.
• You must document profound research-based knowledge, or extended practice experience, or a combination of research and practice within urban and regional planning fields with a clear focus on sustainable urban development.
• Good written and oral communication in English

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.  

Preferred qualifications

• Master`s degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering or Geography are preferred, candidates from other disciplines with relevant research and teaching experience in the field of Urban and Regional Planning.
• Applicants that can document a combined experience from planning practice and research.
• Documented research or practice experience within the context of the Norwegian Planning and Building Act or a Scandinavian planning system.
• Skills in GIS and digital planning tools.
• Research experience demonstrated through successful funds applications, coordination, and participation in research projects, as well as publications and peer-review in scientific journals.
• Good written and oral communication in a Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

Salary and conditions

As a Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross NOK 604.700 – 825.900 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.   

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

• A research plan
• Details of projects for which you have served as project manager, including information on financing, duration, and scope
• Names and contact information for three relevant referees

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.

NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
