Description

New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD)  invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate to support the ongoing development of a regional ocean model for the Arabian Peninsula including both physical and biogeochemical components. The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Paparella and in close collaboration with researchers and faculty of the newly established Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (ACCESS), an interdisciplinary research center focused on regional climate and environmental change.

The position will begin in summer 2023 and will extend for two years, with continued renewal possible depending on performance and budgets. Candidates must have a PhD in ocean sciences or a related field completed by December 2022. Experience in numerical ocean modeling and data analysis is considered crucial experience, ideally with an emphasis on coastal oceanography and biogeochemical modeling. Experience with the ROMS model is an advantage. In addition to modeling and analysis activities, part of the job will consist in conducting field measurements on board of the NYUAD coastal vessel. Some previous field experience is preferred but is not necessary, however the willingness and ability to develop the skills necessary to  work on boats with oceanographic equipment (multiparameter profilers, sampling rosettes, ADCP, etc.) is a strict requirement.  The ideal candidate would have a demonstrated ability to conduct both biogeochemical OGCM numerical simulations and analysis of field-observed and remote-sensed data. A written statement of past research accomplishments must accompany the application. Among the potential focus areas are: the overturning circulation of the Gulf, the role of benthos in determining hypoxia, harmful algal blooms, the robustness of circulation and biological features to changing climate scenarios. The successful candidate will work with scientists at NYUAD and with international collaborators to further our understanding of the physical and biological oceanography of the Arabian Gulf. Participation in international conferences is encouraged and funding for this purpose is available.

The position comes with a very attractive salary (commensurate to experience) and a benefits package including  housing allowance, annual flights, tuition for children (if relevant), and medical insurance. Salary and benefits are entirely tax free in the UAE. The closing date for applications is March 31st, 2023.  Only those candidates shortlisted for an interview will be contacted.
