About the opportunity

Economics is a diverse and fascinating discipline that addresses a range of issues that we face in modern life and plays a central role in shaping our society at every level.

This role provides technical and operational support to the Chief Investigator and the team to support the research activities in development economics, for projects including the Interoperable Payment Systems project. The core of the role involves write code and conducting econometric analysis (e.g., running regressions and carrying out other data analysis, visualizing results in tables and figures, and carrying out computational tasks) using software such as Stata, R, and Python. The role also includes preparing relevant research materials in collaboration with team members in Australia and overseas, and facilitating the efficient operation of the research by providing essential technical and operational support. The role may be of particular interest for people aspiring to advanced research (e.g., MPhil, PhD) studies in development economics or related disciplines such as economics, applied statistics, data science, or quantitative finance, in the future.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • coordinate the activities associated with research projects, and work towards ensuring that experiments/etc are prepared for and run smoothly, in partnership with the University of Sydney-based CI and overseas partners.
  • write code and conducting econometric analysis (e.g., running regressions and carrying out other data analysis, visualizing results in tables and figures, and carrying out computational tasks) using software such as Stata, R, and Python
  • carry out literature reviews, background and descriptive research, and support the production of research and policy outputs such as academic papers, academic and policy presentations, research summaries, blog posts, etc.
  • carry out routine tasks fairly autonomously, with some/minimal guidance and/or supervision once process/procedure is agreed upon and/or learnt.
  • prioritise their own work to meet any deadlines and project needs.

About you

We are looking for a Research Assistant who possesses:

  • ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
  • advanced skills data analysis, using statistical analysis tools, and reporting on research findings
  • excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day to day operational matters
  • strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement and ability to prioritise workload during busy periods
  • working understanding of relevant aspects of the Work Health and Safety Policy and relevant legislation, including Safe Laboratory Practices, as applicable to the work environment
  • experience in a research-intensive environment or interest in teaching and working in academia
  • experience in carrying out scientific literary searches and preparing literary reviews for further analysis
  • extensive experience in developing and working on research projects, including expertise in using research protocols, experimental design, ethics submissions and grant applications.
  • prior studies equivalent to a University of Sydney honours degree in economics or related discipline (econometrics, statistics, data science, etc) or the University of Sydney Master of Economic Analysis, would be highly advantageous.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
