The School of Computing & Information Systems (CIS) undertakes research and teaching across a range of information technology disciplines including Software Engineering, Information Systems, and Computer Science. CIS is the most highly ranked School of Computing and Information Systems in Australia according to all major rankings (THE, QS, ARWU). It offers a comprehensive range of IT and IS courses at all levels, including offerings in science, engineering, and business, and is at the forefront of computing research in Australia and internationally with close links to major computing research initiatives, including Melbourne Bioinformatics, CSL, The Cremorne Digital Hub and CSIRO’s DATA61.

We have an existing highly successful research team in the area of the appointment, a large number of PhD students, and a substantial cohort of graduate students in our coursework Masters programs.

About the Role

The University of Melbourne is seeking an outstanding academic with expertise in Computer Systems, in particular in the areas of Operating Systems, Networking, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Programming Languages, or Systems Architecture to join an internationally recognised group of academics within the School of Computing and Information Systems in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.

You will make a significant contribution to leadership in the Computer Systems discipline within the School of Computing and Information Systems. You will ensure that computer systems research, teaching, and engagement activities are flourishing, and act as a mentor to computer systems staff.

You will also actively collaborate in research within the School and wider University and be expected to engage with industry and government. This position reports to the Head of School

Responsibilities include:

• Provide leadership in the evaluation of curriculum development and renewal at School, Faculty and University level
• Build and sustain strong research activities, with a focus on interdisciplinary activities where appropriate
• Provide leadership in the discipline area of computer systems
• Work actively with industry advisory groups and with external industry bodies to ensure a productive relationship between the University and the community around the computer systems-centric disciplines

About You

To be successful in this role you will have proven success in working collaboratively and an ability to engage and build highly productive relationships with corporate executives, staff, and diverse stakeholders, both internal and external to the University and the ability to develop these networks at national and international levels. You will bring exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships that inspire students and staff and other members of the School, University, and wider community. You will also bring drive, energy, and a vision for building and leading a world-class research program.

You will also have:

• A research doctorate or equivalent in Computer Systems or a relevant field
• A demonstrated relevant world-class track record of high-quality research and scholarship in computer systems, as evidenced by research publications in high-quality conferences, journals, and technical reports as well as other performance indicators
• A distinguished high-profile international standing of research excellence in computer systems
• A track record of leadership, including the organisation of workshops and conferences, development of enabling resources, and involvement in outreach activities
• A track record in attracting research funding from competitive grant agencies and other sources including industry
