An exciting opportunity for a quantitative scientist to work on a Global Health research programme in the School of Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education, within the Faculty of Medicine, based at Southampton General Hospital.
The position is funded by the National Institute of Health Research through a Global Health Professorship awarded to Professor Nuala McGrath. The CHERISH programme focuses on couples’ health in sub-Saharan Africa, and is a partnership between the University of Southampton and two South African institutions: Human Sciences Research Council and University of Cape Town.
The aim of the research is to investigate protective health effects associated with being in a couple (marital or cohabiting), and measure the influence that partners have on each other’s health behaviours and health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa.
You will analyse secondary, population health data available from cohorts, Demographic Health Surveys and longitudinal population surveillance systems. You will use advanced statistical methods including structural equation modelling and survival analysis. In addition, you will have the opportunity to provide statistical training for couples-level analyses to researchers in sub-Saharan Africa.
You will have expertise in programming in Stata, R or latent variable software.
Your contribution to both applied analysis and methodological development will be recognised through authorship on publications, including as first author where appropriate.
Depending on experience the position will be appointed at Senior Research Fellow (Grade, 5: £40,931- £51,805 per annum). This is a Full Time Fixed Term post for 12 months.
Essential Skills
- A PhD in a relevant subject (Epidemiology, Demography, Medical/Social Statistics, economics, bioinformatics, data science or equivalent) with high statistical content
- Advanced statistical skills and experience of using Stata or R
- Previous experience analysing longitudinal population, panel or cohort data and reporting of health research studies
- A track record of peer-reviewed publication
- Ability to communicate complex statistical information clearly, in non-technical language, both verbally and in writing to a range of audiences
- Motivation and ambition to make a personal contribution to Global Health research
Experience of structural equation modelling is highly desirable.
Interviews will be held by Zoom / Teams soon after the closure date. The position is tenable as soon as possible. Informal inquiries may be made to Prof. Nuala McGrath via email: N.McGrath@soton.ac.uk
