About the opportunity

The School of Art, Communication and English (SACE) is a vibrant, outward facing school whose pedagogic practice, research profile and external engagements are shaped by synergies between the disciplines of Art History, English, Media and Communications, Film Studies, Theatre and Performance Studies and the practice-based arts disciplines of the Sydney College of the Arts. The school is committed to culture-making and engagement with creative practice across a range of forms, consolidating expertise in media communication and digital cultures, English and creative writing, film and moving image, performance studies and visual arts. We have nationally and internationally recognised research strengths in literary studies, art theory and history, performing arts, journalism, communication and media studies, and digital media and cultures. The ambition is that graduates from the School of Art, Communication and English will be future culture leaders, shaping national and global practices, policy, communications and engagement across arts and media sectors.

The school is now seeking to appoint an outstanding academic at the level of Lecturer in Digital Cultures to join our rapidly growing and highly successful department. This is a teaching and research opportunity intended to build capacity in the fast-growing undergraduate Digital Cultures program and the Masters of Digital Communication and Culture, located in the Media and Communications discipline. The successful candidate will possess a proven track record of critical, reflexive research and be able to articulate strong intellectual and pedagogical visions across the interdisciplinary spectrum of digital cultures teaching and research fields, which include: Internet cultures and governance, platform-based digital entertainment, emerging technologies (AI, AR/VR, Internet of Things, robotics), digital policy and platform governance, and human-machine communication.

The successful candidate would have responsibility for unit co-ordination in some of the following: Elements of Digital Cultures; The Past and Futures of Digital Cultures; Everyday Digital Media; Internet Transformations; Social Media Cultural Production.

The position is a teaching/research position, that will include HDR supervision. The successful candidate will be expected to develop curriculum and undertake research leadership that also informs teaching and curriculum development.

About you

• a relevant PHD
• a research profile evidenced by original, high-quality and independent research across a spectrum of digital culture fields
• broad experience in teaching and learning, as evidenced by participation in team teaching, HDR supervision and experience in teaching in a variety of settings
• demonstrated success in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives which inform curriculum development
• a developing network of relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders
• experience in supervising or mentoring others and/or coordinating team activities
• understanding of current issues in digital policy and platform governance
