Description
New York University Abu Dhabi invites applications for a full-time tenured professor position of Premodern Arabic literature with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2023. We seek a scholar with a broad and deep knowledge of Arabic literary and intellectual traditions of the pre-modern period including, but not limited to, Quran and tafsīr, Arabic poetry and its criticism, travel narratives, adab compilations, legal texts, Sufism, and philosophical works. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to author original research in these areas and have an established track record of publication of scholarly works, translations, and critical editions.
The holder of this position will bolster NYUAD’s commitment to research and publication on the Arabo-Islamic literary heritage, through contributions to such projects as The Library of Arabic Literature (a series of facing-page English-Arabic translations published by NYU Press) and in collaboration on other future ambitious research ventures. The successful candidate will also strengthen NYUAD’s teaching mission by contributing to undergraduate programs, such as Arab Crossroads Studies, Literature and Creative Writing, Arabic, and the Core, and will participate in the planned creation of interdisciplinary graduate programs in Arabic language, literature, Islamic studies and related fields.
