Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Fellow in ‘The Role of Single Cell Eukaryotes in Microbiome Health and Disease’ in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a leading department for microbiology, infectious diseases and immunology education and research, focusing on translational outcomes (https://medicine.nus.edu.sg/mbio/). Appointments will be made on a yearly contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of extension, depending on performance and outcomes.

Purpose of the post

The Research Fellow will be responsible for leading several exciting research projects on the cellular, immunological and pathological impact of protistan parasites on the gut microbiome. The RF will work closely with the Principal Investigator and collaborators at the NUHS Microbiome Core and the Immunology Translational Research Programme to ensure the successful execution of the project and achievement of milestones. The RF will also be involved in general lab management, grants management and supervision of junior researchers within the research team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Fellow will be performing interdisciplinary research with collaborators with strong immunity, immunopathology, microbiome and metabolomic expertise, and will be accountable to the Principal Investigator (PI). The RF will be able to:

  1. Oversee and lead several microbiome-related projects;
  2. Provide administrative and secretarial support to the project, such as organizing regular meetings to maintain regular communication and updates with other members of the research team;
  3. Perform experiments, analyze data, write up and publish findings in high-impact journals;
  4. Guide and supervise junior researchers within the RF’s area of expertise;
  5. Maintain the highest standard of professional conduct and record keeping in accordance with policies and procedures;
  6. Assist with any other duties of a similar nature that are delegated by the PI.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

  1. Have a PhD in Life Sciences or related disciplines;
  2. possess experience in microbiome research including bioinformatic analyses of 16s or metagenomic data;
  3. experience in in vitro co-culture experiments, cell and molecular biology methods, flow cytometry assays, laboratory model work;
  4. be able to work independently and in a team, have an investigative nature, attention to detail;
  5. have knowledge of microbiome bioinformatic applications, e.g. QIIME2 DADA2, LDA;
