Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in Building Energy / Building Environment / Building Safety and Resilience (two posts) (Ref. 221219009)

PolyU is one of the world’s leading institutions of Higher Education and provides exceptional research, teaching and living environments in one of the world’s greatest cities. The Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering (BEEE) contributes to PolyU’s world ranking of 15th in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2022 subject rankings of Architecture and Built Environment and 15th also in the QS 2022 subject rankings of Civil and Structural Engineering.  BEEE is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Construction and Environment, and offers a full range of programmes leading to the awards of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy, Master of Engineering, Master of Science and Bachelor of Engineering. Currently there are 62 research staff and 120 research students (studying for PhD), over 600 full-time/part-time Master’s students, an undergraduate student body of over 250 full-time students.  BEEE currently has 33 full-time academic/teaching staff members engaging in a wide range of research activities organized in the following three themes:

Building Energy: Energy issues in buildings addressed in the context of both demand and supply to promote sustainable built environments.

Building Environment: Optimisation of buildings and built environments for thermal comfort, indoor air quality, visual/spatial and vibration/acoustic aspects to improve occupant health and productivity.

Building Safety and Resilience: Protection of building occupants from hazards such as fire and lightning to improve safety and resilience of communities, buildings and the built environments.

BEEE is seeking internationally excellent candidate(s) with exceptional track record of research and scholarship in any of the aforementioned themes with preference to candidates demonstrating a strong and individualistic vision of the challenges facing modern urban environments and the opportunities afforded by emerging technologies to address them.

The appointees will be required to

(a)   undertake teaching duties at various levels;

(b)   supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and theses;

(c)   conduct research in related areas and contribute to the development of the Department’s research strength;

(d)   initiate, lead and participate in scholarly research in his/her area of expertise and be active in research leading to quality journal publications and in bidding for external research grants and applied research projects;

(e)   engage in programme / curriculum planning, administration and development;

(f)   provide leadership in developing a programme, a subject discipline or a research programme, etc.; and

(g)   undertake relevant administrative duties.

Applicants should

(a)   have a doctoral degree in an appropriate related discipline;

(b)   have strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research;

(c)   be able to demonstrate effective classroom teaching skills and have good interpersonal skills;

(d)   have an excellent command of English;

(e)   have an excellent record of research and scholarship commensurate with their experience; and

(f)   demonstrate good potential in bidding for research grants as well as in establishing significant externally funded research programmes.

The applicants should demonstrate strong potential to be internationally prominent through a track record of excellent research and teaching. They will be expected to contribute to the development and delivery of degree programmes; teach in engineering design relevant to their technical specialization; and should have been involved in major research projects relevant to their discipline.

While applications are open to anyone with an outstanding research and teaching track record in any of the areas above, preference will be given to those with a demonstrated track record and expertise in electrical services (electrical and electronic engineering with applications in or related to buildings) and acoustics and noise control in buildings and the built environment.

Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment for Assistant Professor will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. An appropriate term will be provided for appointment at Associate Professor level.
