About the Role 

Research Level ARA / ARAS

The Research Assistant / Research Associate will contribute to bioinformatics support for the neuroblastoma-related MRFF-funded projects carried out by the Cell Signalling Laboratory, Neurovascular Research Laboratory and Gene Regulation Section of the Centre for Cancer Biology (CCB), the Tissue Architecture and Organ Function Laboratory and other CCB projects as appropriate.

Research Level BRF

The Research Fellow will implement and conduct high quality bioinformatics research and report on research outcomes in line with research goals and milestones of the Centre for Cancer Biology, facilitating collaboration and translation of research findings.

The Centre for Cancer Biology (CCB) is an alliance between the University of South Australia and CALHN and is co-located with other cancer-focussed researchers within a purpose-built building in Adelaide’s Biotech and Medical Precinct. The CCB studies the fundamental causes of cancer in order to find new ways to prevent and treat the disease and is a recognised hub for innovative science leading to breakthrough therapies.

Core Responsibilities 

Research Level ARA / ARAS

  • Contribute to planning of research by participating in planning sessions, new ideas on research directions and undertaking pilot studies
  • Contribute to the execution of research by actively participating in the bioinformatic analysis of data, designing experiments including appropriate controls, maintaining daily comprehensive records of work performed and results of studies
  • Contribute to the dissemination of new knowledge by drafting reports, abstracts, scientific papers and other instruments providing accounts of research undertaking and the findings observed
  • Contribute to a safe and ethical working environment by complying with human ethics, animal ethics, privacy and other appropriate guidelines.  

Research Level BRF

  • Contribute to planning of research by participating in planning sessions, offering new ideas on research directions and undertaking pilot studies
  • Contribute to the execution of research by actively participating in the production of data, contributing to the development and maintenance of pipelines for the QC, analysis and visualisation of a wide range of genomics data and where necessary develop new custom bioinformatics methods and/ or pipelines
  • Contribute to the dissemination of new knowledge by drafting reports, abstracts, scientific papers and other instruments providing accounts of research undertaking and the findings observed
  • Contribute to a safe and ethical working environment by complying with human ethics, animal ethics, privacy and other appropriate guidelines

Essential Skills and Experience

Research Level ARA

  • An Honours degree in a related discipline
  • Minimum three years demonstrated experience working in a high-performance computing environment
  • Programming skills in one or several of the following areas: Python, R, C/C++, Perl, SQL, Go or Java, as well as the following: high-throughput sequencing, statistics and data integration
  • Prior experience in the analysis in omics techniques including genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics or proteomics
  • High-level oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaborate effectively with others in a multi-disciplinary research environment

Research Level ARAS

  • A postgraduate qualification in a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience working in a high-performance computing environment as well as prior experience in bioinformatics software/package development
  • Demonstrated participation in relevant areas of research and knowledge of literature involved in, and experience with laboratory procedures relevant to, the research project/s
  • Demonstrated competency in recording, analysing, presenting and disseminating research to stakeholders including the preparation of papers for high quality publications or posters for conference presentations
  • Programming skills in one or several of the following areas: Python, R, C/C++, Perl, SQL, Go or Java, as well as the following: high-throughput sequencing, statistics and data integration

Research Level BRF

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in bioinformatics as evidenced by prior publications in high impact journals in the field
  • Programming skills in one or several of the following areas: Python, R, C/C++, Perl, SQL, Go or Java, as well as the following: high-throughput sequencing, statistics and data integration
  • Prior experience in the analysis in omics techniques including genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics or proteomics
  • Prior experience working in a high-performance computing environment
