The Centre for Research in Inclusion is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic researcher with previous experience of qualitative research to contribute to work on a prestigious UKRI-funded study ‘Teaching Accessibility in the Digital Skill Set’ under the leadership of UKRI Future Leaders Fellow, Dr Sarah Lewthwaite. This education project explores pedagogical culture and knowledge in the teaching and learning of digital accessibility in technical disciplines such as Computer Science, and the workplace. This is done to seek practical and theoretical understanding from multiple perspectives. In this role, there will be a particular focus on case studies of pedagogical innovation, and on how teachers, trainers and peer-educators develop and make use of available learning resources.

As part of our team, you will be contributing to: recruiting participants (e.g. lecturers, teachers and trainers in the tech sector, government and the third sector, user groups), working with stakeholders including disabled peoples’ organisations, making practical arrangements, preparing for and conducting interviews and focus groups based on video-stimulated dialogue, to develop case studies; as well as writing research papers and reports and other research impact activities.

You will have a research interest in teaching and learning and digital accessibility, alongside a PhD or equivalent professional qualification and experience in Education or a highly relevant discipline. You will also need to demonstrate experience of conducting qualitative research, including using interview and video, qualitative data analysis, and writing for publication. As part of the role, you will also be required to travel in the UK and internationally, outside normal office hours including occasional overnight stays for research, conferences and specialist training.

One research fellowship is available. The post is offered as 12 months full-time, or alternatively may be taken up part-time for 15 months at 0.8FTE* or for 19 months at 0.6 FTE*). The role is based at Southampton and available immediately. Flexible working is available.

*For applicants interested in this role, please note: This part-time role is unlikely to support a Certificate of Sponsorship with a part time salary amount (a Certificate of Sponsorship is required to obtain a Tier 2 visa to work in the UK).

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Interviews will take place on Friday 27th January 2023.

For an informal discussion about the post please contact Dr Sarah Lewthwaite, Southampton Education School, email: S.E.Lewthwaite@Southampton.ac.uk
