Research in the Gibson Biophotonics Lab (http://www.gibsonbiophotonics.com) focuses on building custom microscopes with new capabilities for clinical diagnostic imaging and basic biomedical research. We have developed miniature head mounted microscopes for imaging in freely moving animals to study neural circuits and cell dynamics during behavior. Additionally, we are investigating non-invasive optical imaging tools for neuronavigation in surgeries deep brain electrodes. We work in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative team that includes physicists, engineers, and neuroscientists.

Specific Position Duties:

We are looking for a talented and self-motivated candidate to work on projects at the interface of neuroscience and photonics. More specifically, the candidate will develop novel imaging methods for studying neural circuits during behavior. Responsibilities include design and execution of projects that use. Expertise in photonics and microscopy are required. Familiarity with neuroscience research and in vivo imaging is preferred. The candidate will develop research protocols, carry out experiments, collect, analyze, and interpret data, and have the responsibility to communicate progress and results clearly and effectively both within the laboratory and through presentations and publications.

This position provides interdisciplinary training in a research environment that connects bioengineering research ideas and prototypes with the neuroscientists that use these tools in their studies. The ability to communicate across disciplines is essential. The successful applicant is highly motivated, driven and collaborative, and has demonstrated the ability to independently complete research projects. The applicant will begin by working on projects in the laboratory that are currently funded and then can transition to pursuing grant funding for their own creative solutions to challenges in imaging and neuroscience. This position will provide in-depth training in technical skills including optical engineering use of the latest microscopy techniques, as well as project management, grant writing, and leadership.
