Student and Education Services

Student Disability and Inclusion is seeking to appoint committed people to work with disabled students. We are seeking to recruit notetakers for all science subjects, notably biology, chemistry, physics, maths, engineering, and computer science. The duties will include notetaking, study assistance and practical assistance in academic settings around the campus(es). Some work will also be provided through online teaching and learning facilities. The ability to take notes directly on a laptop would be an advantage.

You should have a good standard of education with at least 2 years of Higher Education and degree or equivalent as desirable. Understanding of the higher education setting, academic learning situations, and an interest in some academic areas would be an advantage.

An excellent understanding of data protection and professional boundaries is also required. In addition, you will need good concise communication skills, written and interpersonal, plus time management and personal organisation.

You will also demonstrate appropriate sensitivity to the needs of disabled students in a positive, enabling and non-judgmental manner and work in a facilitative manner within the remit of the role.

Training in Notetaking Skills will be provided, and you will need to attend in order to work as a notetaker or provide evidence of an equivalent qualification. Additional training will be provided.

Initial work will be from 3 January 2023. Reappointment in the 2023-24 academic year will be subject to negotiation. The hours of work vary, depending on the students’ timetables, but will usually be consistent across each semester; you will need to be able to offer at least 10 hours per week between 9am-6pm, Monday-Friday, in term time. Appointment is subject to enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

The hourly rate for this post is £12.07 per hour (plus holiday pay).

Please apply online, including your CV, and a statement (up to 500 words) demonstrating how you meet the requirements of the Person Specification, particularly highlighting any experience with people with additional needs, and scientific experience if applicable.

The closing date for this position is Sunday 11th December at midnight.

Interviews will be 19th and 20th December, completed on Highfield Campus or via Microsoft Teams. Please state in your application if there is any time during that period when you will not be available.
