About the Roles
The Melbourne Disability Institute (MDI) has two new and complementary Research Fellowships examining different aspects of the design and delivery of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). You will be joining a community of academics and experts working together at the University of Melbourne to strengthen the evidence base and inform future research, policy and practice in this dynamic area.
We are looking for one researcher with a strong track record of qualitative and/or mixed methods applied research in one or more of the areas of disability, health, social welfare, inequality or public policy.
For the complementary position we are looking for a researcher with a strong track record in quantitative applied research and development of statistical models in one or more of the areas of disability, health, social/welfare policy, inequality and public policy.
- Working with MDI to develop a multi-year, multi-project program of work related to the NDIS and the Australian Disability Strategy
- Developing an area of expertise in disability research, with a view to establishing a national and international profile
- Working with research teams across the university on a coordinated approach to using quantitative and qualitative data to frame policy problems and solutions
- Contributing to the development and implementation of new and existing research proposals
- Collaborating with existing research team, project management team, stakeholders and funders to deliver coordinated project results
- Disseminating research findings to both academic and non academic audiences
- Co-supervise and support project team members, moving onto lead roles as the fellowship progresses

You have demonstrated high level project management skills in all aspects of the research process, including ability to produce high quality work in tight timeframes. Your excellent interpersonal and communication skills will allow you to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including academic peers, sector, community, policy-makers and government.
You will also have:
- A PhD in social or political science, psychology, public policy or public health or a related discipline (Qualitative)
- A PhD in a relevant discipline such as epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, public health, demography, public policy or social science (Quantitative)
- Demonstrated track-record and interest in evidence-based policy reform, inequality and disability research
- Demonstrated experience in quantitative research methods and analysis (Quantitative)
- Demonstrated experience in qualitative and/or mixed methods design, implementation and analysis (Qualitative)
- Demonstrated track record in high impact peer reviewed journals

About Melbourne Disability Institute
MDI is an interdisciplinary research institute based at the University of Melbourne. Established in 2018, MDI facilitates and supports collaborative, interdisciplinary research to build the evidence base needed to guide social and disability policy reforms and to advance opportunity and equity for people with disability and their families.
Throughout our work we strive to promote the inclusion and wellbeing of people with disability, explore issues that are, or are likely to become, important to people with disability and recognise and foster the important contribution people with disability make to research.
MDI is led by Professor Bruce Bonyhady, one of the key architects of the NDIS. Professor Bonyhady was inaugural Chair of the National Disability Insurance Agency from 2013 to 2016 and is currently co-chairing an independent review into the NDIS.
