Sport

Durham University is one of Europe’s leading sport universities and has been ranked in the top three team sport university’s since 2013. In 2019 the University completed the construction of a £32m Sports & Wellbeing Park, adding to a prior investment, on the same site, of £8m in 2012 making it the sporting facility in the north of England.  This year as a result of the continued success both at a performance and participatory level the university was awarded the Times and Sunday Times Sports University of the Year.

Role

Primarily the Head Coach will lead and develop the men’s and women’s hockey programme, ensuring that the club is successful and maximizes its potential on and off the field of play.  The post holder will be responsible for developing positive relationships with the performance support team, wider university support departments and lead the development of training programmes across the club.   The post holder will support the implement of the strategy for recruiting the best men’s and women’s hockey players. The post hodler will also develop and maintain relationships with all the hockey specific national governing bodies (in particular England Hockey) and with British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS).

Essential Criteria

  1. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop excellent working relationships both internally and externally. 
  2. Excellent digital competence with demonstrable skills in using core digital tools including internet, email, digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, digital booking system, project planning, financial systems. 
  3. Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent experience).
  4. Post-16 qualification (or equivalent experience).
  5. Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience).
  6. Continuing professional development required to maintain professional recognition. 
  7. Professional practitioner with knowledge and expertise used to contribute to the delivery and development of services, events and activities within the organisation. 
  8. Experience of managing and developing a team or teams and/or line management qualification. 
  9. Experience of providing specialist advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues, including more senior colleagues. 
  10. Experience of being able to network effectively and develop strong and productive working relationships, to influence perceptions of the University. 
  11. Experience of implementing policy and procedures and involvement with future changes for a service area. 
  12. Knowledge and experience of ensuring compliance with regulatory and organisational policy and guidelines.   
  13. Ability to contribute to planning at operational level. 

Desirable Criteria

  1. Provide management for the operation of a University hockey programme.
  2. Manage and monitor performance and provide metrics and reports to line manager and head of department, making recommendations as appropriate.
  3. Participate in and monitor communities of practice and partnership working internally and externally.
  4. Network and engage with external and internal stakeholders to gather feedback and identify future hockey programme needs, to ensure excellence in programme provision and delivery.
  5. Prepare and manage the hockey budget and monitor expenditure to ensure cost-effective hockey programme delivery.
  6. Contribute to the production and analysis of hockey specific statistical performance metrics to identify successful delivery and areas for future improvement.
  7. Distribute and process key performance information to all stakeholders both internal and external. Implement continuous programme improvements to enhance the delivery of hockey programme.
  8. Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using appropriate media and methods.
  9. Contribute to the delivery of activities that generate external income.
  10. Develop, modify and optimise hockey protocols and methodologies.
  11. Deliver support elements of the wider student experience.

Further information about the role

The Hockey programme at Durham University is one of the most successful hockey programmes within higher education.  The Club has 6 men’s and 6 women’s teams that compete in both BUCS and the England Hockey national leagues.  The club is supported by a number of support services including strength and conditioning, sports psychology, nutrition, medical and physiotherapy and performance analysis services.

The coaching structure is lead by the Head of Hockey and supported through a number of full time, part time and volunteer coaches.

The Club has an elected student leadership team which the post holder would be required to work with and is supported by an honorary President who provides advice and guidance to the club.

Typical Role Requirements

Service Delivery

  • Provide input to the design and development of service processes, techniques and deliverables for one or more service areas or projects.  
  • Responsible for managing small budgets for consumables and some capital items, keeping records and processing invoices. 
  • Provide management for the operation of a stakeholder focussed service delivery area. 
  • Prepare and manage the service area budget or budgets and monitor expenditure to ensure cost-effective service delivery. 
  • Contribute to the delivery of activities that generate external income. 
  • Deliver support elements of the wider student experience.

Planning and Organising

  • Manage operational service activities to ensure excellence in the stakeholder experience.  to the analysis of stakeholder feedback to help define needs and requirements, inputting to the design and planning of services.

  • Develop, modify and optimise service protocols and methodologies.
