Northumbria University in Newcastle is inviting applications for 3 Post-Doctoral Research Associate positions in ocean and ice-sheet modelling. Each position is fully funded for 48 months. Candidates will undertake leading research in the field of climate change, with a focus on the evolution of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and Southern Ocean between present-day and 2300. We invite candidates with interests and experience in the fields of physical and computational oceanography, numerical glaciology, mathematics, physics, or related disciplines. You will be able to develop your research portfolio across a broad range of topics, depending on your specialism and interests. The main research objectives of the project are the development of a coupled ice-ocean model for the Antarctic Ice Sheet and Southern Ocean, perform numerical simulations to estimate future freshwater fluxes and sea level rise contributions from the Antarctic Ice Sheet for a range of future climate change scenarios, and the application of advanced stochastic methods to validate and optimise models using past satellite data, and to quantify model uncertainties.


The successful candidates will be part of the Inter-Disciplinary Research Theme Extreme Environments, the peak of excellence 'Future of Ice on Earth', and will be based in the Department of Geography & Environmental Sciences at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. The department is ranked 2nd in the UK for research power in Geography and Environmental Studies, with over 90% of our research outputs, and 100% of our research impact rated as world-leading or internationally excellent (UK Research Excellence Framework, 2021). 

Candidates will work closely with Associate Professor J. De Rydt, and become part of a growing team of experts in ice-ocean interactions at Northumbria. The PDRA posts are funded by UKRI's Future Leaders Fellowship programme and the Horizon Europe project OCEAN:ICE, which involve links to several leading research institutes in the UK, Europe and US. Candidates will have the opportunity to work and interact with other research groups worldwide, and be absorbed into a diverse and vibrant research community tackling important questions in climate change.


Successful candidates will have a PhD in either Physics or Mathematics, or in a related discipline such as Physical Oceanography, Geophysics or Earth Sciences, and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in numerical modelling. The post will commence in spring 2023, with 1st of March being the target date.
