About the opportunity

Applications are invited for the appointment of a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Material Fabrication, Processing and Functionalisation for Tissue Regeneration. This is an exciting opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary team with internationally renowned leaders. You will be the key researcher implementing a breakthrough in tissue regrowth from concept to translatable demonstration. Our interdisciplinary team has performed initial proof-of-principle exploration on a new approach for tissue growth utilizing pluripotent stem cells seeded on plasma functionalized, resorbable polymer filaments to generate 3D, multi-cell type, tissue structures, Whilst the role is based in the School of Physics as it builds on the polymer and plasma technologies, it is expected that the focus of the work will be on cell culture and characterisation in the School of Medical Sciences. There will also be opportunities to engage with potential commercial parties for defining the next stages in development of this technology. In this role you will:

  • demonstrate research excellence and publish original research
  • develop research collaborations across interdisciplinary teams and industry
  • participate in research student supervision at the undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • develop your profile through conferences and seminars
  • contribute to a positive, supportive and inclusive research environment

About you

  • a PhD in Medical Science, Biomedical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline (or near completion)
  • a background and proficiency in cell culture
  • proficiency with brightfield and fluorescent imaging techniques such as confocal microscopy
  • the skills to clearly express ideas and communicate within a team environment
  • the ability to work independently and
  • across interdisciplinary teams

Desirable criteria include:

  • experience in materials science, especially polymers, including material characterisation
  • experience with culture and differentiation of embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells
  • familiarity with analysis of fluorescently labelled cells using software such as ImageJ/Fiji
  • experience in surface functionalisation
  • experience in flow cytometry
  • experience in specimen sectioning and histological techniques
