The Role

The Faculty of Science and Engineering is seeking a self-motivated and proactive Business Development Manager to join the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology (CoESB).

In this varied role, you will provide exceptional strategic relationship management and specialist advice to industry and researchers regarding partnership and collaborations and contribute to business development with the aim of growing the ARC CoE's and other Synthetic Biology collaborations, industry and government partnerships and funding opportunities.

Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, ARC CoE in Synthetic Biology, you will:

  • Initiate, develop and manage strategic relationships with philanthropic, government and private organisations with the aim of creating strategic alliances, promoting the research expertise within the University, and securing collaborations and funding
  • Consult with strategic partners to understand the needs and opportunities for collaborative research, contract research, consultancies, and tenders and identify emergent/current trends in the industry in shaping strategic directions of the Centre
  • Identify and triage research projects demonstrating translational impact or commercialisation potential; to assist these teams with connections for legal advice, business services, financing and strategic partners to support the emergence of spin off companies from the Centre
  • Contribute to business development and work collaboratively with the COO, Director and stakeholders to actively pursue opportunities with a view to enhance relationships, collaboration and financial/contract outcomes. Support the development of business plans, business cases and applications for funding as required
  • Represent the CoESynBio at roundtables, forums, stakeholder meetings, and other strategic internal and external committees and working groups as appropriate.
  • Coordinate, and support the CoESB Commercialisation and IP Management Advisory Committee, and the CoESB Risk Management Committee
  • Develop and manage relationships with both internal and external stakeholders across member universities within the CoESB, including functions & services, partners, clients, industry, funding and government bodies

About You

This role would suit an experienced business development manager or would be a great opportunity for someone with experience in general management, operations, finance and/or communications and marketing to broaden their skill base. You will be comfortable in a stand-alone role providing all levels of business development support and administration support across business activities. More broadly, you will be a strategic thinker and relationship enabler who is confident and adaptable and has the demonstrated ability to translate strategy into operational plans and guide others in the implementation of these.

You will possess strong business acumen, conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills and be known for your sound judgement and decision making. You will be skilled at negotiating and managing relationships to achieve organisational goals. You will be familiar with how government funding affects research funding and commercialisation opportunities across a diverse range of stakeholders and be comfortable nurturing a collaborative and cooperative work environment across a complex variety of stakeholders in a service-oriented environment.

The ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology (CoESB) is administered by Macquarie University (the hub) and has 9 nodes at Australian Universities consisting of 19 Chief Investigators and 19 partner organisations located in Australia and throughout the world.

The ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology (CoESB) will provide the technical innovation critical for Australia to develop a vibrant bioeconomy building on the nation's strengths in agriculture. For thousands of years we have used microbes to create bread, wine, cheese. Now, our Centre will pioneer new approaches to the design of synthetic microbes, enabling the development of custom-designed microbial communities, synthetic organelles and new to nature biological pathways and enzymes. CoESB will combine engineering with molecular biology to design and construct novel biological systems that can convert biomass from agriculture or waste streams to biofuel, bioplastics and other high-value chemicals.

Essential

  • Relevant tertiary qualification/s and or equivalent experience in Business Development or Research Partnership Management, along with the demonstrated ability to plan at both strategic and operational levels with organisational skills to ensure the delivery and implementation of business development plans and services
  • Good understanding of the contractual and collaborative requirements in a research environment, coupled with a sound understanding of the business and R&D needs in industry, government and start-ups
  • Excellent relationship management skills with the demonstrated ability to develop effective strategic and operational relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong customer service focus and the proven ability to develop an innovative, collaborative and supportive work environment across a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Highly developed conceptual, analytical, problem solving and research skills including the ability to develop innovative solutions

Desirable

  • Working knowledge of publicly-funded Research centres or large research initiatives in a university setting, preferably within a synthetic biology or scientific environment to confidently engage with staff, clients and stakeholders in the development and delivery of services
  • Experience in research translation and IP and commercialisation management, and the governance and processes required to move research from laboratory to commercial scale
