Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Senior Research Fellow in the Human Potential Translational Research Programme (HPTRP), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The HPTRP brings together researchers from a wide range of disciplines with an interest to maximise human potential. In HPTRP, through human studies, we adopt a holistic perspective that considers human potential as an integrative measure of health, productivity, performance, human capital and overall well-being over the lifespan, in our environment. Appointments will be made on a one-year contract, with the possibility of a two-year extension.

Purpose of the post

The Senior Research Fellow will be responsible to lead and align studies with the overall goal of the funded project (Physiological thresholds and heat health advisory for vulnerable populations). The Senior Research Fellow will work closely with the Principal Investigator and study team members to ensure the successful and timely completion of the project. The Senior Research Fellow’s role includes leading and mentoring a team in designing research protocols, data collection, analysis and presentation of the data collected.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Research Fellow will liaise with relevant personnel in the project team and be accountable to the Principal Investigator.

The Senior Research Fellow will:

  1. Ensure project milestones and deliverables are met by working closely with the Principal Investigator and study team members;
  2. Design and execute research protocols involving thermal physiology, by drawing upon reviews of previous literature, hypotheses and research best practices, and fronting relevant ethics applications;
  3. Mentor and guide students (undergraduate and post-graduate) and research staff in designing and executing research protocols;
  4. Lead and train the study team in conducting research involving multiple tracks (i.e. diverse group of human participants), to determine the physiological thresholds of vulnerable populations undertaking exercise in the heat;
  5. Generate international peer-reviewed publications;
  6. Lead and participate in new grant applications;
  7. Maintain the highest standard of professional conduct and record keeping in accordance with policies and procedures; 
  8. Work beyond routine work hours due to the nature of research involving human participants; and
  9. Assist with any other duties of a similar nature that are delegated by the Principal Investigator. 

Qualifications

The applicant should:

  1. Hold a Ph.D. from a reputable university, preferably in exercise physiology, thermal physiology or thermal impact on humans;
  2. Possess a strong technical background and extensive research experience in designing and conducting human trials, particularly in paediatric and/or geriatric populations; 
  3. Have an extensive record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals in human research;
  4. Have an excellent command of spoken and written English;
  5. Be highly motivated, meticulous and well-organised, with strong leadership and interpersonal skills;
  6. Adaptable, able to work independently and able to manage a diverse multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team;
  7. Be willing to collaborate with international experts; and
  8. Proficient in the use of computer applications and data analysis software, e.g.MS Office, SPSS.
