Description
The Department of Child and Family Development (CFD) at San Diego State University seeks applicants for a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position with a research program focused on the identities and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and others (LGBTQ+) children, youth, students, families, and/or educators with a focus on the intersectionality of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ issues. The position will begin Fall 2023. Applicants must hold an earned doctorate by Fall 2023 in Family Studies, Child Development, Human Development and Family Science, Psychology (Developmental or Clinical/Counseling Psychology), Sociology, Social Work, Education, or a closely related social science or mental health field field.

The overarching criterion for a successful candidate is a demonstrated record of success in teaching, service, and/or mentoring historically marginalized students. San Diego State University is a Hispanic Serving Institution and Asian American, Native American, Pacific Islander Serving Institution that resides on Kumeyaay land. In addition, San Diego State University is listed as Campus Pride Index's Best of the Best Colleges and Universities in the United States for its support of LGBTQ+ students. A commitment to these students as well as students from other minoritized groups (e.g., African American, Latinx, Native American, Southeast Asian) is a key commitment of the department.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain an active research agenda that specifically addresses diversity, equity, and inclusion as it relates to the candidates' area of research focus
  • Maintain an active research agenda, securing extramural funding, and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals
  • Teach and advise/mentor undergraduate and graduate students in the CFD program
  • Participate in service at the department, college, and the university level
  • Collaborate with department faculty and staff in departmental governance, program development, scholarship and service
  • Serve as an active member of relevant scholarly societies and/or professional associations or professional organizations or campus committees that advance historically marginalized populations
  • Mentor or advise individual students from historically marginalized populations
  • Provide professional development-related services to the broader community


Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree in Family Studies, Child Development, Human Development and Family Science, Psychology (Developmental or Clinical/Counseling Psychology), Sociology, Social Work, Education, or a closely related social science field. Doctoral students who will have their doctorate degree by the start of the position are eligible to apply.
  • Demonstrated expertise in scholarship and teaching as it relates to the identities and experiences of LBGTQ+ students, families, and educators with an intersectionality of BIPOC issues.
  • We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of historically marginalized groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria: (a) are committed to engaging in service with historically marginalized populations within the discipline, (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for historically marginalized students and faculty within the discipline, (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring historically marginalized students, (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of historically marginalized populations and communities into research, (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an historically marginalized group, (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages historically marginalized communities, (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.
