Company Description

Creating a brighter future for all

Griffith University is a progressive, values-led university dedicated to learning, leadership, and innovation. This is your chance to help us achieve our vision to transform lives and add to human knowledge and understanding in a way that creates a future that benefits all.

Since opening in 1975, Griffith has grown from one campus and 451 students to become a comprehensive, multi-campus institution, with 50,000 students and more than 200,000 graduates.

Job Description

The Griffith Criminology Institute (GCI) is an international leader in criminology research, situated within Griffith University’s Arts, Education & Law Group. It is known for its rigorous research focused on real-world problems and the development of innovative and applied solutions. It houses the Social Analytics Lab, and conducts translational and foundational work across diverse areas, especially young peoples’ wellbeing, justice and legitimacy, preventing sexual and serious violence, and transforming criminal justice institutions to achieve fairer and more effective outcomes. It has a developing focus on technology and crime, and the health-justice nexus.

The University seeks to appoint an outstanding individual to the key leadership position of Director of GCI. Reporting to the AEL Group’s Dean-Research, the appointee will have a strong external focus, possess a high-level record of academic and/or policy-related expertise, and be recognised as a leading authority in a cutting edge area of criminology.

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for five years as Director, Griffith Criminology Institute, with an underlying Professorial (Level E) continuing appointment in the School of Criminology & Criminal Justice.

While the position is based at the Mt Gravatt campus in Brisbane, strong visibility at the Gold Coast GCI node is important. As Griffith is a multi-campus University, there may be a requirement for you to work across other campus locations.

The successful applicant will possess a doctoral qualification and an outstanding national and international reputation for impactful empirical criminology research with an applied focus. In addition, the successful candidate will have leadership experience in a high-profile institutional context, as well as a proven track record of success in managing research and publicoutreach/engagement programs.

In addition to the above, you will demonstrate:

  • Established links with the academic, industry and government sectors,
  • The capacity to expand the Institute's existing national and international networks (including the diversification of income streams),
  • Ability to manage and develop relationships with key internal and external stakeholders,
  • Demonstrable ability to manage academic researchers in pursuit of high-quality research outcomes and the research environment necessary to support these.
