Assistant Professor of English

Department Description:
English at USD offers students the opportunity to explore a wide range of genres — poems, plays, novels, essays, letters, films and new media — from a variety of historical contexts, medieval to contemporary, illuminated by timely theoretical and philosophical questions. Explore and discover the complexities of the human experience and come to appreciate the power of language to shape thought through creative writing, literary histories, culture and theory courses.


Detailed Description:
The Department of English invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in transnational literary and cultural studies beginning in Fall 2023. We seek a colleague with a specialization in transnational literary and cultural studies whose research and teaching focus on, but are not limited to, African and Afro-diasporic, Arabic, Asian, Caribbean, Indigenous, South Asian, or Latinx diasporic literatures and cultures. Desired subfields include: gender and sexuality studies, film and/or media studies, environmental humanities, and digital technologies. We are particularly interested in candidates who have a strong record of comparatist and interdisciplinary work and can contribute to interdisciplinary minors in Women's and Gender Studies, Latin American Studies, Asian Studies, Africana Studies, and Film Studies. In addition to teaching undergraduate courses in their area of expertise, the successful candidate will also teach courses in the core curriculum.

This hire is among the tenure-track diversity cluster hires that issue from the Horizon Project of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of San Diego. These cluster positions are designed to attract a diverse set of scholars who will have opportunities to participate in campus and community collaborations. The successful candidate will join other new faculty members from varying disciplines across the College of Arts & Sciences who will have similar pedagogical or scholarly interests to collaboratively engage in the interdisciplinary thematic cluster in one of the following areas: 1) Climate Change and Environmental Justice, 2) Borders and Social Justice, or 3) Technology & the Human Experiences. This is a full-time tenure-track position with a 3/3 teaching load.

Job Requirements:
The successful candidates will
  • Hold an advanced degree, preferably a doctorate or other terminal degree. A Ph.D. in English or Comparative Literature (with an anglophone research profile) is preferred. ABD candidates will be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and research, mentoring undergraduates, and fostering a climate of inclusion and diversity.

Applicants should hold a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. This position also requires an active scholarly agenda and publications in the field and commitment to collaborative leadership in addition to university and professional service.
