Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Ophthalmmology ,Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

The Eye N’ Brain Research Group led by Asst. Prof. Raymond Najjar is interested in neurobiological interactions between the eye and the brain and in processes by which light can regulate ocular and neurological functioning and development. The eye is not just an extension of the brain. It’s a window to neurological health and a complex organ that drives and modulates many non-visual cerebral functions such as the pupillary light reflex, circadian entrainment, cognition, alertness, sleep and mood.The goal of the group is to translate fundamental findings in visual neurosciences into screening and therapeutic clinical interventions.

Appointment will be made on a one-year contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of extension for up to three years. The position is available from January 2023 onwards.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be involved in an innovative research project spanning over 3 years and investigating novel artificial intelligence-driven pupillometric and gaze tracking strategies to detect ocular and cerebral neurodegeneration (e.g., glaucoma, Parkinson’s disease). The successful candidate will benefit from a research lab equipped with state-of-the-art pupil and eye trackers, and will be part of a versatile research group including visual neuroscientists, biomedical engineers, ophthalmologists and computer scientists. Appropriate mentoring support will be received by the senior members of the team, with the aim to produce high impact publications and secure additional and individual research funding. The candidate will also have the opportunity to mentor PhD Students under the supervision of the PI.

Qualifications

The applicant should have:

  • A PhD in Visual Sciences or Visual Neurosciences or Cognitive Neurosciences or Optometry or any other related discipline
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in visual sciences research, light, pupillometry and/or gaze tracking (including years of masters and/or PhD)
  • Good knowledge of the Anatomy and Physiology of the Visual System Knowledge in Data Analysis and Statistics Data Interpretation and Presentation skills
  • Excellent Scientific Writing skills (manuscripts and grant applications)
  • Soft skills: Self-motivated, adaptability and teamwork
  • *Knowledge in Device Development, Coding and Data Processing is a considerable plus
