Imagine the future of human factors engineering – then drive it forward

Look to the future in a world-renowned centre for education, research and enterprise.

Are you an experienced academic with a passion for Human Factors Engineering? Are you looking to develop and lead an academic team where you can further build your profile and experience?  Then the Department of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering is the ideal place to make your mark. We have brand new, world-class facilities, a vibrant research culture, and are committed to all our students achieving their best.

You will join our Department in one of the strongest and largest Schools of Engineering within the UK. You will oversee the Human Factors Group (HFG) which is part of the Transportation Research Group (TRG), one of the UK’s longest established and leading centres for engineering and human factors-related transport teaching and research, based at the Boldrewood Innovation Campus.

Within this environment we will support you to further develop your academic career while you play a pivotal role in enhancing our research strength.

We are looking for individuals with interests that

  • make use of facilities eg driving simulator, instrumented hybrid car, instrumented bicycle and Virtual Reality Cave
  • develop facilities in physiological measures for data collection and analysis
  • apply quantitative methods for understanding human performance
  • apply sociotechnical methods and approaches to understand system interaction across a variety of transportation domains (road, rail, maritime, aviation)
  • design and evaluate future transport systems
  • want to work in a collaborative team environment, with a track record of mentoring and developing the careers of more junior staff

We are a team that ensures that our student cohort are educated to the highest of standards and are looking for individuals who want to keep our programmes and modules at the cutting edge of transportation and human factors engineering education while sustaining our high student satisfaction.

To make the most of this exciting role, you will need a PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience) in a relevant area of human factors engineering along with a track-record of published research. You’ll have a proven ability to develop innovative research proposals and attract significant research funding.  Highly organised, with strong communication skills, you’ll be ready to manage and motivate others.

In return we help you shape a role that’s uniquely tailored to your interests and lifestyle. As a university with an Athena SWAN silver award we are recognised for our commitment to improving equality for all in science and engineering.  Our comprehensive benefits package also includes a contributory pension scheme, generous holiday allowance, subsidised health and fitness facilities, a cycle-to-work scheme and a range of discounts.

Please include (i) research statement, (ii) teaching and citizenship statement highlighting areas of interest in education and willingness to contribute to departmental activities and (iii) statement addressing your commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusivity. You can enter these statements in the textboxes provided in the online application form. Alternately, upload documents (no more than 1 page per statement) and provide a summary of these statements in the textboxes. All three statements are required for your application to be considered. As part of these statements, candidates should evidence:

  • future research interests/plans (including grant capture);
  • past research activities demonstrated by journal publications and funding portfolio;
  • your ability to develop/deliver innovative teaching and assessment;
  • that you are caring and can support students (UG/PG) and colleagues;
  • that you can work well in a diverse team and can build an inclusive department; and
  • that you have potential to lead activities relevant to the department including outreach.

Details of our different post graduate and undergraduate programmes can be found via the hyperlinks.

Your application will be treated in strictest confidence. For informal inquiries about this or other opportunities, contact the Head of Department, Stephen Turnock (srt@soton.ac.uk ) or the Head of the Transportation Research Group, Tom Cherrett (T.J.Cherrett@soton.ac.uk).
