Job description

We are seeking a high-quality Grade 6, Post-doctoral Research Associate to contribute to the research undertaken by the Gautel group.  

The Gautel group, which sits within the Randall Centre for Cell & Molecular Biophysics Department at King’s, is committed to elucidating the mechanisms that organise sarcomeres and exploring the pathological implications of mutations in sarcomeric proteins such as Titin. This post is funded by the British Heart Foundation to further investigate the genetic, molecular and functional impact of rare Titin missense variants in dilated cardiomyopathy. Therefore, the postholder will need to be familiar in the development and execution of cell biology and biophysical techniques to assess the effects of missense variants on proteins such as titin: their functions and interactions with binding partners.


The role will also involve liaising with medical professionals upon investigation of new disease-linked genetic variants, disseminating the research effectively and contributing to further research funding. The ideal candidate will have (or be about to complete) a PhD in cell biology, biophysics or related subjects.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 08/01/2026 

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent


Key responsibilities

•      Plan and carry out experimental work, devise strategies for further development and advancement of the project.  

•      Meticulously record, analyse, and write up the results of experiments. Be able to support all scientific conclusions drawn by appropriate record and note keeping.  

•      Prepare data for inclusion in manuscripts and grant applications.  

•      Contribute to writing of publications for appropriate scientific journals.  

•      Attend and present obtained results in posters and/or oral presentations at laboratory meetings, workshops, and conferences.

•      Work in collaboration with colleagues as well as other groups, within the UK and abroad, as required by the project.  

•      Balance the competing pressures of research and administrative demands. 

•      Conduct research in an ethical and accurate manner.  

•      Keep up with technical and experimental developments in the field and apply knowledge to experimental interpretations.  

•      Cooperate and share expertise with all members of the research team.  

•      Be committed to your own personal career development.   

•      Be aware of the risks in the work environment and their potential impact on your own work and that of others. 

•       Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be relevant to the role outline.

Skills, knowledge, and experience


Essential criteria  

1.       PhD in cell biology, biophysics, or related field.  

2.       Significant understanding of human biology and biophysics. 

3.       Experience in cell culture/biophysics techniques including live cell imaging 

4.       Ability to define and lead a research area, taking responsibility for planning and undertaking own work. 

5.       Ability to work well as an effective member of a wider multi-disciplinary team and to share and encourage good practice. 

6.       Experience in balancing the pressures of research, teaching/administrative demands and competing deadlines. 

7.       Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. 

8.       Willingness to contribute to all aspects of the lab, including supervising and mentoring students 


Desirable criteria

1.       Experience in using CRISPR genome editing technology 

2.       Experience in induced pluripotent stem cell culture 

3.       Track record of high-quality publications 

4.       Experience in supervising and developing research students and/or research staff. 

5.       Ability to communicate conceptual and complex ideas to a variety of audiences using appropriate media and methods.
