The University of Wollongong’s School of Humanities and Social Inquiry (HSI) is seeking to appoint two full-time Career Development Fellows at Level A or B (depending on experience level) in Philosophy for 3-year positions beginning in January 2023.

HSI consists of a collection of Disciplines including Philosophy, History, Sociology, Politics, Indigenous Studies, Cultural Studies, and Languages and Linguistics. The School is home to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of International Studies, and the Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics degrees. The Discipline of Philosophy has research strengths in philosophy of science, philosophy of mind & cognition, applied ethics and environmental philosophy and has a teaching program focused on contemporary and applied philosophy.

The primary purpose of these positions is to make significant contributions to teaching within the Philosophy program. Candidates should have a demonstrated capacity to contribute to teaching across all undergraduate levels in Philosophy. There are immediate teaching needs in Philosophy of Mind and Cognition, Philosophy of Gender and Race, and Social Philosophy. Experience teaching in at least one of these areas is essential. The ability to teach in areas of Applied Philosophy, and in Biomedical Ethics in particular, would be an asset.

These are teaching intensive positions; however, research is an essential component , and the Fellows will be expected to have strong records of research relative to opportunity and be able to contribute high-quality research within the School. The area of research specialisation is open. In all cases, research and teaching expertise should complement, rather than duplicate, that of current staff. The Fellows will also be expected to contribute to governance at an appropriate level.

This position is located at the Wollongong Campus; however, travel to the South Western Sydney Campus may be required from time to time.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Philosophy by the closing date for applications.

Candidates from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

You will be prompted to respond to a selection criteria questionnaire as part of the application process.  For further information about this position, please contact A/Prof Patrick McGivern, Philosophy Discipline Leader, School of Humanities and Social Inquiry via patrickm@uow.edu.au

Closing Date: Tuesday 13 December, 11:59 PM
