Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is seeking a Associate Professor in Device Related Infection Management to join School of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Health, Academic Division.

The Associate Professor will support the new joint appointment position of Professor and Chair Device Related Infection Management established by QUT and Metro North Health. We seek to appoint an outstanding candidate to this position with demonstrated extensive experience and expertise to undertake research in this multidisciplinary area. The successful appointee will have a research doctorate and a strong research track record that aligns to the area of implant-related infections.

About the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH)

The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) is a 929 bed quaternary and tertiary referral teaching hospital located at the Herston site within Metro North Hospital and Health Service, close to the Brisbane central business district (CBD). RBWH is the largest provider of health care services for Queensland Health. RBWH provides high quality care over a comprehensive range of specialties including medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, cancer, obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatal, intensive care and trauma services.

There is an active research environment within the RBWH campus facilitating world-leading research and education. Key research partners include other health service providers, the Queensland Institute of Medical Research Berghofer (QIMR Berghofer), the University of Queensland, and the Queensland University of Technology; whilst partnerships with more than 14 Queensland and national universities, three TAFE providers and a collaboration with Australian Defence Force (ADF) help RBWH carry on the development of our future medical and professional workforce.

About the Herston Infectious Diseases Institute (HeIDI)

The Herston Infectious Diseases Institute (HeIDI) aims to deliver innovative infectious diseases research that achieves clinical excellence in the surveillance, diagnosis and management of serious infections that impact on our community, prevents and monitors healthcare-associated infections, and promotes partnerships between industry, government and academic institutions. 

HeIDI is based  on the Herston Precinct – a precinct with a history of clinical excellence, education and research spanning over 150 years and home to many of Queensland’s major infectious diseases and microbiology services and resources.

By harnessing an exciting critical mass of talented, multi-disciplinary infectious diseases researchers and clinicians on the Herston Precinct, HeIDI will deliver on a platform built of a combination of mature, existing capabilities. 

The vision for the Herston Infectious Diseases Institute is to be a world-class, collaborative clinical research institute, translating and evaluating novel diagnostic, therapeutic and management innovations into evidence informed clinical practice – our three pillars are translational research, education and clinical excellence.

In pursuing this vision, the Institute will:

  • enhance the translational and clinical research response to the current and future pandemics, and preparedness for future pandemics caused by known and novel agents
  • improve the outcomes of patients with serious infections at all Metro North facilities and across Queensland and Australia
  • lead the prevention and monitoring of healthcare-associated infections throughout Queensland
  • leverage further grant and philanthropic funding for the Herston Precinct by undertaking world leading research in clinical infectious diseases
  • create a legacy by training the next generation of infectious diseases clinicians and researchers.

About the Jamieson Trauma Institute (JTI)

The Jamieson Trauma Institute (JTI) strives to achieve the optimal trauma patient’s outcome by focusing on the patient’s journey to include the prehospital, acute care, rehabilitation and long-term outcomes for people who suffer a traumatic injury.

This collaboration includes themes such as data analytics; research and epidemiology; quality assurance and injury prevention and will endeavour to address both state-wide and national trauma care.

JTI, based at RBWH and in partnership with stakeholders across Queensland, brings together a unique and integrated bundle of services including: trauma, intensive care, burns, rehabilitation, and military medicine (including training and preparedness for disaster management and advanced military training prior to deployment);  continuous service improvement and reporting; fundamental science and research (through partnerships with clinical, academic and research); partnerships with other trauma services, the State-wide Trauma Clinical Network, Hospital and Health Services, government and industry targeted at advancing trauma care and supporting a trauma prevention model; building system capability across the trauma service continuum; developing and sharing quality improvement guidelines.

  1. Completion of a doctoral qualification in the relevant disciplinary area and/or recognised significant experience and leadership in a relevant discipline area (medical, nursing, pharmacy and/or allied health).
  2. An internationally recognised record of excellence in research and/or scholarship.
  3. Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining collaborative partnerships which extend best practice, implement innovative solutions and advance new research and teaching opportunities.
  4. Proven leadership that drives high performance and a collaborative culture, including the demonstrated ability to successfully mentor staff and students.
  5. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work within an interdisciplinary team of academic colleagues, while engaging with industry stakeholders to enhance teaching and research performance.
  6. Demonstrated excellence in innovative teaching and research approaches which enhance learning and academic outcomes for the students and QUT/MNH.

To be eligible for appointment to this role, you will possess the following:

  1. Proof of qualification and current registration or eligibility to register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Specialist Medical Practitioner in Infectious Diseases.
