Job Description

The Biology Department at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) invite applications for Research Assistant to assist satellite remote sensing retrieval for ecological and hydrological parameters. The duties for the position will include digital image processing and integration of multi-sensor and multi-scale satellite remote sensing (e.g., MODIS, SMAP, and Landsat) and other geospatial data for extracting vegetation index, vegetation phenology metrics, gross primary productivity, evapotranspiration, SIF, soil moisture, surface temperature, and freeze/thaw metrics; fieldworks for measuring plant phenology, soil moisture, soil temperature, and vegetation biophysical parameters; writing scientific papers and publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals; giving presentations on research findings.

Minimum Qualification

A MS in environmental science, eco-hydrology, remote sensing or a related discipline. Demonstrated knowledge of remote sensing fundamentals, including satellite optical-infrared, thermal, and microwave remote sensing. Digital image processing and analysis using RS software environments (ENVI, QGIS). Programming ability in IDL, C/C++, R, Google Earth Engine or, preferably, Python. Experience in both Linux and Windows environments. Ability to communicate and interact well with others in a large interdisciplinary research group.

Preferred Qualification

PhD preferred. Proficiency in conducting independent scientific research and demonstrated ability to publish in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. Understanding of numerical methods for data integration and analysis, including machine learning. Interest in research on climate and environmental change impacts on the dryland ecosystem. Experience in ecosystem process modeling. Experience in conducting fieldwork is also desired (e.g., drones, radiometers).
