Research Engineer, Novel Ion Generator by Gaseous Charge Separation

Job Description

Positions are available for Research Assistants or Research Engineers in the group of Dr. Soh Siow Ling, at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). The research in the group is highly interdisciplinary and spans across materials science, chemistry, physics, and engineering.

One area of focus is functional stimuli-responsive polymers for developing “intelligent” systems. The smart functions of stimuli-responsive polymers are developed by combining the unique material properties of the polymers, transport of molecules, reactions, and design. Many applications are currently being developed, including drug delivery, soft robotics, diagnostic devices, separation, and others.

Another area of focus is the field of charge separation at the interface of matter. Because little is known about these phenomena, there are a lot of opportunities for fundamental discoveries and development of new applications. The projects in the research group involve investigating the fundamental mechanisms of charge separation, fabricating the materials, and engineering novel applications of the phenomena. A wide range of applications are currently being developed, including energy harvesting, removal of virus-loaded aerosol, separation, chemical analysis, and antistatic and anti-adhesive surfaces.

Many other research topics are also of interest, including electrochemistry, self-assembly, 3D printing, reaction diffusion, and others. In general, the projects range from fundamental investigations, creating applications, to commercialization of products.

Job Requirements

The candidate may be a chemist, material scientist, engineer (e.g., chemical, mechanical, etc), or any general technical background. Because of the highly interdisciplinary nature of the research group, candidates with different research backgrounds are also encouraged to apply. The candidate should have good hands-on skills in experimental work.

Covid-19 Message

At NUS, the health and safety of our staff and students are one of our utmost priorities, and COVID-vaccination supports our commitment to ensure the safety of our community and to make NUS as safe and welcoming as possible. Many of our roles require a significant amount of physical interactions with students/staff/public members. Even for job roles that may be performed remotely, there will be instances where on-campus presence is required.

Taking into consideration the health and well-being of our staff and students and to better protect everyone in the campus, applicants are strongly encouraged to have themselves fully COVID-19 vaccinated to secure successful employment with NUS.
